“Does God really forget our sins?”

That’s the question Anthony Grasso (Fabien Frankel) wrestles with in the latest episode of Task (HBO). He wants to know how God will deal with all his past sins.

Interesting. At our church, 7:30 am is always Rite I. 10:30 alternatives by season. We are Rite II right now.

Yup. It is interesting how we have changed.

The 7:30 / 8:00 a.m. service became the choice for people who preferred quiet worship, those serving in a ministry in later services (ushers, choir, altar guild), and those who wanted to attend early and have the rest of Sunday free.

Holy Communion was celebrated less frequently - monthly or quarterly in many parishes - and often in the early morning without music.

The idea of an early, quiet service goes back to the 18th century in the Episcopal Church and the Church of England. Parishes generally celebrated Morning Prayer as the main Sunday service, often at 11 a.m. or so, with hymns, choir, and sermon.⚓

A little bit. I was thinking of Michelangelo's La Pieta.

There's a lot there. The sense of justice and so many interesting aspects of moral theology.

Thank you for sharing. Task is a pretty good show.

As Saint Paul writes, “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” (Romans 5:20). Or as the translation from The Message puts it, “When it’s sin versus grace, grace wins hands down.” That’s the heart of divine mercy: not amnesia, but love stronger than memory. Love that knows no bounds.

The sacrifice of Jesus becomes an inexhaustible fountain from which forgiveness pours out for all who seek it.
And to return to Grasso’s question, I believe that God doesn’t forget our sins as though they slipped his mind. God chooses not to remember them. God refuses to hold them against us.

Confession is an invitation to trust in the mercy of God. Something profound happens: sin is not simply ignored - it is abolished. The cross didn’t make forgiveness easy; it made it possible. The graces that flow from the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ vanquish the power of sin.

I believe that the sacrament of confession is about reconciliation - and thus about our connection with God. Confession’s for humans. Confession is also gift that restores us in grace.

Tom tells him: “Confession’s for humans. It’s a human practice to help us deal with the shame. Confession is not for God’s sake… If you want to be forgiven, all you have to do is ask.”
It’s a funny & very human exchange. Can God forgive us? Even those sins we can’t seem to stop feeling guilty for?

Seated across from former-priest-turned-FBI-agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo), he wonders aloud: “All those sins they just disappear like they never existed? ‘Cause I mean, God don’t seem like someone who forgets, right?

Love this. Witch of Endor is great pick too. I appreciate it.

What are the spookiest passages in Scripture? Stories or verses that give you chills, make you wonder, or remind you of the mystery of God’s power and presence in the dark?

And while you’re at it, what hymns or chants would fit the mood? Think shadows, mystery, awe, and holy goosebumps.

Calling all Christian ghouls, saints, and scripture sleuths!

I am planning a Spooky Evening Prayer. Think of it as a candlelit service filled with mystery, beauty, and a touch of the spine-tingling!

Help me build the perfect atmosphere:

Give it all to Christ.

We are grateful for all who came out on Tuesday night in support of our immigrant siblings in Alexandria. We gathered in solidarity with them and with one another.
