Samus, Link, and Mario are definitely three of a kind; because they don't talk and express basic responses, it can be misconstrued that they lack a real personality, when in reality, they're intended to be an Avatar for the player as they explore their respective worlds.

Kit and Krysta brought up an excellent point in their podcast; People are averted to MacKenzie because they had grown accustomed to Samus' silence, but when you think about it, he's a fleshed out character, while Samus is just kind of static because she's mute.
