⚗️📝🚨 So, we also tried our hand at some CO2 electrochemistry 😁. It turned out to be a fun (and technically challenging) project. Great work by Jonas! @reactchemeng.rsc.org @synbioc.bsky.social @chsteven.bsky.social pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...
Electrochemical hydrocarboxylation of styrene with CO2 in continuous flow
This study demonstrates the advantages of an electrochemical continuous flow cell regarding the β-hydrocarboxylation of styrene. An efficient continuous flow method was developed, obtaining high yield...

⚗️📝 Computational tools continue to speed up chemistry research. As his final (?) PhD paper, Bavo established a scalable and continuous aminolysis method of methyl esters, using ammonia. Congrats! pubs.rsc.org/en/content/a...
Direct aminolysis of methyl esters with ammonia in continuous flow through Bayesian optimization
Amides play a crucial role in the pharmaceutical, animal health and agrochemical industry. Despite the availability of various catalytic systems and coupling reagents, many methods suffered from long ...

⚗️📝🚨 Chemistry paper alert: About 10 years ago we noticed that photo-oxidation of furfural in non-nucleophilic solvents delivers a 1/1 mix of maleic anhydride and the corresponding butenolide. No explanation was found until now. Jonas finally cracked that mistery case!

Efficient continuous flow oxidation of furfural to maleic anhydride using O2 as a green oxidant
This research investigates different oxidative pathways to obtain maleic anhydride starting from the biorenewable furfural in continuous flow. A single step O21 oxidation towards maleic anhydride was ...

⚗️📝 Paper alert: It's not because a solvent is bio-based and benign that we shouldn't consider good recycling strategies. Andreas Dejaeger nicely demonstrates how dihydrolevoglucosenone can be recovered from reaction mixtures by using membrane separation techniques:

Continuous Dihydrolevoglucosenone Recovery Using Commercial Membrane Technology
Cyrene, or dihydrolevoglucosenone (DHL), is a biobased and biodegradable solvent that can be produced in two steps from cellulose. It has properties similar to dipolar aprotic solvents such as NMP and...

Choosing a field of study when starting higher education is a difficult and potentially life changing decision. So, this weekend, Stef Ghysels and myself tried to explain to highschool graduates what a master's degree in Bioscience Engineering: Chemistry and Bioprocess technology actually entails.

After a fantastic year of chemistry, filled with both scientific struggles and breakthroughs, it's the groups team spirit and collaboration that matters most. So, after this fun teambuilding, we'll continue to 'slip' into bluer skies in 2025! Best wishes to all!
