I painted this a few years ago for a friend—a wedding gift for his grandson in the military. He had such a precious photo from the grandson’s return home (I think from boot camp, if I remember right) to his now-wife, it was such a needs-to-be-painted picture! With the red and white dress and blue uniform, and such emotion in the gesture of the hug, I loved working on this so much!

This was the concept I came up with based on the photos he gave me. I loved the overlay idea and I think it really adds to the emotion of the reunion moment.

But the client ended up wanting to go a different direction…follow to see the final piece and let me know which version you prefer!

Ladies and gentlemen, spirits and sidhe, fellas and faeries, I present to you—drumroll please… CREST, the lovely mermaidcore fantasygirl whathaveyou, in her full, completed splendor!!!

She is beautiful! She is indescribable! She is a sirenous enchantress! She nearly broke my heart, my mind, my hands in her making, and I bleed that you may stand before her and adore her!

*ahem* Alright, nerdiness aside for now. In all seriousness this was a really fun one. Curly hair is difficult, especially where it’s really pile-y like that flippy spot, but this color made it so worth it. It looks like a cresting ocean wave.
I’ve already complained about the skintone struggles, but I am really proud of myself here. I figured it out all by myself! And I’m so glad I didn’t give up, the warmth is a perfect contrast.
The scales were MURDER on my hand, and they didn’t end up quite how I imagined, but they still look nice.
And I had originally planned to have seaweed strands near the bottom, but I decided to swap them for more coral and scales to keep the color palette simpler.
