This is my work-in-progress tentatively dubbed "Archipelago" about exploring a procedural open ocean

Reminds me I had a carpenter show up 2 hours early because "he was in the neighbourhood"
Yep, the effort there is in the algorithm design rather than the level/game design and it's a very clear formula to lay out!

I've considered making something like it in the past but that kind of gameplay is only fun for me if the narrative works with it (Hades being the prime example)
They clap like seals at anything that looks like a rage game or friendslop
Oh boy, and avoid gamedev Reddit while you're at it. The indie dev community is surprisingly toxic - just telling everyone that their game will "fail" if they don't get X number of wishlists etc.

Sorry I ranted about this in a previous post 😆
Ah reminds me of Just Cause 2, when I would take the boat out (literally - take someone else's) and it would take like 10 minutes to cross from one island to another
I honestly feel you though; the worst part has been feeling like you are shouting into the void and nobody cares about this thing you've sunk your soul into.

It makes me want to focus my energy next time on just cooking and building a cool thing rather than obsessing over the metrics
Never forget that the majority of people have never released a game, then the majority of the people who STARTED making one never even finished that.

It's an incredible journey that is hopefully just the beginning!
Need to make the camera bit more dynamic, but the fishing is coming along

I ditched the "eyeballs" and went straight for this idea of having pixelly sprite eyes that I can animate much easier and make this lil dude just a bit more expressive

Some more progress on fishing. It's really nice when you can really hear and feel what you are doing.

I've made so many silent prototypes and they are eerie!

There must be a name for the feeling of being surrounded by unpainted figurines and not feeling it

oh maybe it's burnout 🫠
A work-in-progress: I do not know what this game will be, but it WILL have fishing.

Experimenting with some funky visuals - an "everything is wobbling" shader.

Not sure I like it really - it makes a lot of things unpredictable in their interactions

Argh and don't get me started on the game dev marketing "experts" that have tried to approach me. I ask them what they've worked on and they can't give me a straight answer.

Also there's a few here on bluesky, so approach with caution
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Though I am "part of the problem" the indie space is insanely saturated and the only winner here is Valve
I'm not saying my games are perfect by any means or that I am an expert in these things - but the sheer entitlement, audacity and toxic discourse is making me want to withdraw from all of this and just focus on what matters - making a fun thing that people will enjoy!
AND THEN you look at the kind of games they made that just aren't getting attention and turns out they have no idea how marketing works, how to price a product, how to appeal to a specific audience. They can't even name competitors

Like I said. Exhausting.
Indie developers constantly bickering at each other on social media how to game the Steam algorithm like seagulls arguing over scraps of food when what they really need (and this is a lesson I've learnt) is to take the time to cook
