After trying pretty much every terminal editor out there, I'd say the closest thing that comes to a somewhat decently thought-out editor is micro: github.com/zyedidia/mic...

But it's too primitive.

You can build a decent experience with emacs but it's too fragile and takes forever

Both emacs and vim and pretty much all terminal editors are kinda garbage by modern standards.

Modal editing is just a terrible idea period. But I'm surprised that no amount of tweaking can make emacs competitive with modern GUI-based editors.

Students must first learn how to learn History before they can learn History.

Without teaching these principles teachers are failing their students and themselves.
