I'm experimenting with voice actors on the podcast. I'd like to hire voice actors to play the role of each philosopher in episodes where I'm sharing an original text (so they would read the text "as" the philosopher). But I'm having a hard time finding the right people (1 of 2) #voiceover #voactor

Just for all the Stokes watching, this is a misuse of the word stoicism. Stoicism does not encourage non-action. Jeremy Powell is doing precisely the Stoic thing right now. And, if we understood the context fully, he may have been doing it prior as well.

Currently reading 📚

It's not Stoicism, but it sure provides indirect commentary on why our abandonment of virtue ethics has practically destroyed philosophy in academia.

At least, that's what I'm getting out of it thus far and where I think it's going.

I think it’s time for a proper opposition.
President Trump declared on Wednesday evening that his power as commander in chief is constrained only by his “own morality,” brushing aside international law and other checks on his ability to use military might to strike, invade or coerce nations around the world.

Ha. So far!
@tannerocampbell.com enters dangerous territory here, #stoic advice about dealing with spouses(!), but emerges unscathed.
I've received many questions about what to do when our spouse isn't #Stoic -- and by that, I hope what everyone means is that their spouse doesn't subscribe to Stoic ethical theory (or theory in general). I have thoughts, I'll share a few now.

I was today years old when I found out that George Carlin narrated Thomas the Tank Engine. I’m sitting here, getting my son ready for nursery as he watches the show, and I recognised the voice immediately. I cannot comprehend how I didn’t catch it before. m.imdb.com/news/ni64448...

This MN shooting thing with ICE - it's unreal. The defence of it is unreal. The woman was trying to flee, not run the guy over. You don't KILL PEOPLE for fleeing unless they are fleeing a fucking homicide. Killing a non-violent suspect at a traffic stop shouldn't even be on the table.

Not everyone appreciates their Stoicism study mixed up in Politics or current events, so last week I created a spin-off podcast specifically for these sorts of discussions. practicingstoicism.com

Using drugs as a pretext to get our hands on Venezuelan gold and oil isn’t innovative leadership… it’s land expansion. The only country that has done it in the last two decades (and they did it twice) is Russia.

"Tanner, you write so much about Stoicism. How do you find things to write about?"

I use AI... but probably not the way you think.

AI isn't a substitute for human creativity (hopefully that never happens), but it is a substitute for laborious information gathering and curation.

Why not both?
When you're 20, Spotify will ask you if you want to listen to the music of Marcus Whale or the meditations of Marcus Aurelius.

It's very important that you choose Marcus Whale.

I simply could not finish Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises."

I do like Hemingway's quick snappy dialogue and how quickly and elegantly he moves you through the story, but I just didn't like the story. I think I got about 100 pages in and just couldn't do it after that.

Anyone enjoy this book?

I don't often visit TK Maxx (the UK used TK rather than TJ as apparently TJ Maxx is the name of another brand here), when I do go it's usually with my wife for some odds and ends for the house, or a good deal on a name brand coat, or something like that, but yesterday, I found the book section...

This is why I loath Holiday’s “work” — he knows so little of actual Stoic philosophy. Like, what an absolute SHIT flow chart.
okay just gotta silently not express my feelings ever as hard as I can until I am old and finally die PHEW. So glad I lived to impress the imaginary audience in my own head with my stoicism
Wow, why didn't anyone think of this before

This movie had a big impact on me. I’m only realising it now, 40 years later, rewatching it as an adult. It covered death, bravery, love, and friendship. Heavy for a kids film, in retrospect, but I think I’ll have my son watch it when he’s a few years older (The Christmas Toy, 1986)
