Figure I should do a little who I am thread. Hi, I’m Synchronized.

My only claim to “fame” (if you can call it that) was long ago, in another life (2008ish), I co-hosted & edited a moderately popular podcast called the GamerCast Network: Video Game Show.

My daughter is in a music camp in Santa Fe this week. While waiting for her, I'm trying out the Santa Fe Climbing Center. Nice little climbing gym with some fun #bouldering routes.

Not Asimov. That's Arthur C Clarke.

My 7 year old daughter & I started #indoorclimbing 1.5 years ago.

This was the first 5.10 route I’ve seen her complete. She had a couple accidental touches off the 10 route but this was her second send. First send she made no mistakes.

Once she grows a bit more, she’ll be unstoppable.

New #bouldering route I sent last week.

Getting closer to being able to consistently send V2-V3s.

A couple months ago, I could only get a couple moves in on a V2-V3. Now I can usually send the route or get to one move from the end.

Did some #bouldering last week of new routes.

Today, found out one of the traversals I almost flashed was a V4-V5, which would be a new upper limit for me.

Tried again today and still couldn’t get both hands on the end.

Played Stegegets, roll & write with a common large sheet shared by all players. It was ok.

Biggest complaint, no player aides. Depending on discoveries in play, constantly referring to rules to see bonuses available.

And I would have preferred a dry erase board rather than a sheet.

Popped my left wrist tendon on the pocket on this #bouldering route. Second time I’ve done this. No serious pain, just felt weird.

First time I did this, I taped my wrist for a couple months and didn’t happen again so I got lazy and stopped taping.

Back to taping I guess.

First time I decided I was going to send a V2-V3 route I didn’t think I could do. Took about 5 tries but I finally got it.

Looks great. Reminds me of the creatures in Dark Crystal.

Played River Valley Glassworks a few times at 2 players.

Interesting little filler with a somewhat unique drafting mechanic. I have a few gripes with the color choices and shapes, makes it somewhat hard to easily grok things.

A little reminiscent of Azul.

Tried out Deep Rock Galactic. I’m not a big coop player, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Fast turns, relatively straightforward rules for a “miniatures” game, and introductory mission was good.

Plan to try out a few more missions.

My new challenge for #bouldering, routes with less handholds and requiring more trust in my legs.

Failed this one but it wasn’t a strength issue, more of a fear issue that my footing would slip before I grabbed the hold.

I need to just got for it next time.

Did some #bouldering today. Finally getting better at overhangs. Now I have to try the overhang on the other side which is a bit steeper.

I’ve played some market row games where a good card came out and no way of mitigating for other players like having a cost associated with freshly drawn cards, etc.

Here I may be being too picky. But it still stuck out at me.

There is some compensation for the 2nd player though in other areas.
December 26, 2024 at 10:50 PM
No, it's a normal market row, but in the 2 player game I played, the second player's recharge always refreshed the market row for the other player.

I'm not a big fan of market row in general, too much luck of the draw.

Best game played over the last week was Wondrous Creatures. Pokémon-esque themed engine builder a la Terraforming Mars with some worker placement. Really solid.

Only gripe is the market row. Player order never changes and one player’s recharge always gives others first dibs.

Also tried Tiny Turbo Cars which is a racing programming game where the program is setup via a sliding puzzle. Wasn’t bad and didn’t overstay its welcome, but the sliding puzzle quality left a lot to be desired.

Also played Dawn of Ulos which is fantasy Acquire. Instead of hotels you invest in different races where the “stocks” can be played for effects & combat strength.

My second play of this and it’s ok but I think in the end I prefer Acquire.

Don't get me wrong, I think the core mechanism for actions is great. I wished we had played with the expansion (fixes a worker issue we had).

I can see why people like it.

UI choices gave us issues & I wish the card play was a bit quicker a la Spice Road or had a bit more power without workers.

Next was The Rich and The Good. Pretty solid intro stock game but not as good as Stockpile.

Biggest gripe is, by default rules, start player never changes.
