Mid to late May is the best time for the rarer species

On The Lizard, we get Leucanthemum vulgare subsp. vulgare var. nanum which is usually less then 6" tall, though the flower is the usual size, makes it look very odd.

I found some flowering last week, but way to windy to photograph, tricky to get a good shot at the best of times, though you have got some good shots here.

The River Ottery at Canworthy Water, Cornwall today. It looks idyllic but the water quality was poor with lots of brown algae in the river from pollution, either from agriculture, sewage or both. Very few plants growing in the water itself.

Curly Pondweed in the River Ottery, Canworthy Water, Cornwall today. The leaf tips, slightly wavy leaves and strong serrations mean it can't be anything else, though it looked a bit odd compared to others I've seen in Cornwall.

An attractive but invasive plant, Himalayan Balsam, lining the banks of the River Ottery at Canworthy Water in Cornwall today for #WildflowerHour (see ALT)

Impatiens glandulifera
The seed pods, when ripe, are explosive and catapault the seeds many metres away from the parent plant. The seeds also float and can quickly colonise river systems. It is illegal in the UK to sell this plant or cause it to spread outside of your garden as it is incredibly invasive. It smothers native vegetation and dies back completely in the Winter, leaving bare mud banks which allows excessive erosion and damage to river banks.

@gavinbroad.bsky.social Hi Gavin, is it possible to ID this insect? This photo is all I have of it. North Cornwall today.
sylvatica2024.bsky.social
Luckily I took a sample home and turns out this is Amaranthus hybridus (Green Amaranth).
sylvatica2024.bsky.social
This seems to be a female Ichneumon extensorius wasp that I found in my back garden today in Wadebridge. There's only 1 prior record for it in Cornwall from 1906, so any knowledgable insect person's input would be most welcome.

In a field of Sunflowers, I found a solitary Thorn Apple in fruit, again, a likely seed contaminant when the sunflowers were sown. St. Endellion, Cornwall today.
