In the early 90s, a group of young filmmakers shot their film, Horror Movie. Only three clips from the original movie were published on the internet, but even still the film has grown a rapid fan base. Now years later, Horror Movie has been picked up for a reboot. The story of the past & present of this films history is being told to us by the last surging member of the cast.

As I mentioned above, the chapters alternate between past & present but also have a screenplay in each chapter. I listened to the audiobook which I felt was well done in its performance, but only being able to listen made the screenplay parts a little confusing. Chapter titles make it clear between past & present but the screenplay in within these chapters. After a while I got the hang of it.

Overall, it’s a very slow burn. I felt the overall vibes of this book were strange & creepy but not scary as I had anticipated from a book about a haunted film set. A few scenes did make my stomach churn & the ending wasn’t what I was expecting but felt a little anticlimactic after the slow burn of this book.

I was immersed enough to finish this to the end & felt the audiobook performance was great. But when I think to the content of the book I actually just experienced I don’t think this was the read for me.

Starting this book had an amazing hook. I really felt like I picked correctly when I was searching through horror books wanting a scary read. However, once that wore off the rest of the book did not continue this way.

I was fine with the slow burn beginning & by beginning I mean the entire book up until the last 3 chapters. I forgot how I originally picked up this book for something scary based on the title, cover & synopsis. But I became interested at how everything was going to play out & stuck through with it. I will say as we got closer to the interview I found myself wanting to see what was going to happen next. A couple of twists happen that really caught my interest. But by the time the interview rolled around I found myself completely uninterested. Then the book ends mid interview & we are left with a “to be continued.”

The synopsis & title could use some editing, it feels misleading as they only summarize really the last 20% of the book. This book presents itself as an interview with the devil but it’s only present at the very end & gets cut off midway through.

Maybe now that everything is established the other books in the series will really pick up, but that’s not a journey I am going to take.

And as a side note, reading other reviews mentioning accounts attacking them for the criticism in their reviews & these accounts seemingly only interacting with books from this author has left a sour taste in my mouth. Don’t know if it’s friends, family or the author themself but it has personally made me solidify more that I won’t be continuing this series.

I will start by saying I did read Manacled & loved it, making Alchemised one of my most anticipated reads. In the beginning it was hard to separate them, comparing them & seeing what characters represented who. After a while though I was able to see it for what it is, a completely separate work. It has the outline of Manacled that can be glimpsed throughout, but the rest of the story was changed into something else. I enjoyed the changes made that made it its own work. This world was interesting to be apart of & learning their magic system that felt unique. If you are debating on what to read first, I’d suggest going into Alchemised first to give this book the attention it deserves. I wish I could’ve went in blind myself.

A lot of the side characters felt like little more than names. We don’t have any prior experience with them, unlike our characters who have been around each other for years. What we were given didn’t compel me to be emotionally attached to most if not all of them. At certain points it was hard to keep track of them all. I took my time reading this so when certain names came up I felt like I was supposed to know who they were as if they were mentioned one time previously 400 pages ago, but by that point I had forgotten who they were. Especially in part 2 when a bunch of new players entered the field it took me awhile before I could get everyone straight.

What SenLinYu did with this story was amazing for a debut novel. At the time of writing this Manacled isn’t fresh in my mind, however I really enjoyed this new world they created & the changes they made to the story. Certain aspects like a full cast of new characters seems to have been a bit of a struggle but there’s no doubt this author can write. I look forward to their other books & seeing what they can do with a full original story that doesn’t need to be stripped down or changed.

I’ve been loving it!! I know a lot of people are struggling with the magic system terminology (I am a little too) but overall it def stands on its own. There’s stuff that it could improve on forsure but I like all the changes that were made
