I highly recommend Adam Grant’s “Think again” - especially to those who think Long Covid and ME are psychosomatic.

Think again – the power of knowing what you don’t know (Adam Grant) 🧠

“We refresh our wardrobes when they go out of style and renovate our kitchens when they’re no longer in vogue. When it comes to our knowledge and opinions, though, we tend to stick to our guns. Psychologists call this seizing and freezing.

We favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt, and we let our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We laugh at people who still use Windows 95, yet we still cling to opinions that we formed in 1995. We listen to views that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard.” (Adam Grant, “Think again”)

A new JAMA Network Open study shows that, compared to the pre-pandemic period, health-related absences and health-related exits from the labor force remain 13 % higher. 🧠

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2839932

This is not inevitable. It could be prevented.

How?

• Improving indoor air quality (ventilation, HEPA filters, CO₂ monitoring)

• Using high-quality masks and testing, especially during infection waves

• Staying home when sick — and ending the culture of presenteeism

• Vaccination and early treatment for acute infections

• Rehabilitation and support for post-viral and chronic conditions

• Flexible work arrangements to reduce exposure and burnout

Why it would save billions:

• Fewer infections mean fewer sick days and long-term complications

• Retaining skilled workers reduces replacement and training costs

• Prevention is far cheaper than chronic illness and disability benefits

➡️ Protecting health protects the economy.

Post on X by the epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding

Dear MAGA – guess who just got both the updated Covid vaccine and flu shots today? Your dear leader Trump. Maybe you should get them too.

Sincerely, an epidemiologist who told you Trump would get Covid booster.

After ten months of relative calm, England is now seeing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases.

➡️ aerosol control through HEPA filtration, regular ventilation, and high-quality respirators
➡️ testing and self-isolating when infectious
➡️ high vaccination coverage

Oh, I thought the Swiss are always the best… 😜😜😜
The picture shows a graph of how long ME patients have to wait until the correct diagnosis. It ranges from 5.2 years in Ireland or the UK to 11.8 years in Croatia. Switzerland: 7.1 years. (Obviously they don’t sit around waiting for the diagnosis, but consult one doctor after another…)

Hidden Potential – by Adam Grant 🌱🌳

I recently finished reading Hidden Potential by Adam Grant, and it left a deep impression on me. It’s one of those rare books that changes the way you see growth, success, and talent.
Hidden Potential – by Adam Grant 🌱🌳

I recently finished reading Hidden Potential by Adam Grant, and it left a deep impression on me. It’s one of those rare books that changes the way you see growth, success, and talent.

What I found particularly powerful is how Grant challenges the traditional idea of excellence. He reminds us that true potential isn’t defined by where we start or how fast we progress, but by how we grow through adversity, how we learn continuously, and how we help others rise with us.

A few key takeaways that stayed with me:

- Progress matters more than perfection. What counts is not the distance to others, but how far we’ve come compared to our past selves.
- Talent sets the floor, but character sets the ceiling. Intelligence opens doors; integrity, humility, and persistence determine how far we go.
- When we assess excellence, we should also recognize the effort behind it. Outcomes alone rarely tell the full story of persistence, resilience, and growth.
- Leadership thrives in networks, not ladders. The best ideas emerge when organizations build trust and openness, not hierarchy and ego.

It’s an inspiring reminder that growth is not a race, but a practice — and that helping others uncover their potential is just as meaningful as realizing our own.

Evidence should stand on its own merit, regardless of whether it aligns with our preconceptions or professional identity.

Changing one’s mind is not a weakness. It’s the essence of scientific integrity.

We often underestimate how much our evaluation of an argument depends on who says it, not what is being said.

In science, this is fatal. Evidence should stand on its own merit, regardless of whether it aligns with our preconceptions or professional identity.

I’m struck time and again by how some colleagues dismiss biological evidence simply because it contradicts their established worldview.

If an illness can be transferred to healthy mice through immunoglobulin G, it is — by any rational standard — organic.

And yet, in the debate around ME and Long Covid, the same pattern repeats: a refusal to reconsider, even in the face of converging studies, meta-analyses, and international scientific consensus.

Changing one’s mind is not a weakness. It’s the essence of scientific integrity.

FDR had to hide his paralysis to be electable.

Today, a man’s obvious psychological and cognitive unfitness doesn’t block re-election — it fuels it.

People don’t oppose the bully anymore; they join him, hoping his cruelty shields them from it.

As the economy lists toward stagflation, the White House is not doing “state capitalism” so much as it’s doing “step-on-a-rake capitalism”—a tragicomic bungling of economic growth that fails to advance the very objectives it claims to prioritize. (Derek Thompson)

Imagine if major scientific conferences still denied milestones such as the rubella vaccine, the internet, plate tectonics or landing on the Moon. Yet in 2025, many German-speaking doctors are still taught that ME/CFS is psychosomatic.

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Since 1969, the WHO has classified myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) as a neurological disease (ICD-8). In that same year, the rubella vaccine was licensed, the first internet message was sent, UNIX was born, plate tectonics became scientific consensus, and humans landed on the Moon.

Imagine if major scientific conferences still denied those milestones. Yet in 2025, many German-speaking doctors are still taught that ME/CFS is psychosomatic—despite decades of biomedical evidence and a 1969 WHO classification that placed it firmly within neurology.

You can even transfer Long Covid with immunoglobulin G from affected humans to healthy mice 🐭 (ME/CFS is the severe form of Long Covid). Try that with a psychosomatic disorder…
