It's at the bottom of the wardrobe, under old university textbooks and a graveyard of odd socks and shirts, shoved in there whenever guests came over and promptly forgotten. A shoebox, duct-taped shut, and he can see beneath it where he’s peeled it open before, the torn-up fibres in the cardboard like scarring. He'd done well to hide it there over the past four years. It surprises him when sees it. When he pulls it out, it takes him a moment to recognise whose handwriting it is, scrawled across the lid in permanent marker. It stings, still, how quick he is to remember, but it's just a jab to the stomach, not enough to knock him flat anymore. The kitchen rattles through the open doorway where Wooyoung upturns it diligently, better and quicker at packing than he is. The moving boxes seem huge, piled full of clothes on his bed, when he sits on the floor, shoebox in front of him, and carefully unpicks each end of tape. It's not a good idea, Mingi knows, and it's cemented once he has it open. It’s a time capsule of cards, of notes, of biro sketches of Mingi that he used to slip in his pockets before he left his apartment, of old cinema tickets and receipts, and packets on packets of film photos. He picks up one at random and flips it open: /summer '17/, in that same, messy writing. And there he is, red hair messy and bleach-brittle around his neck, sticking out around his ears. He’s holding the camera above him to get them both in frame, baring all his teeth as he presses their faces together, but still, Mingi's barely in the photo. It's all Hongjoong, winking, fiery, gorgeous, and frozen in time before it all went to shit. "What are you looking at?" Mingi glances up, over at his friend, hand resting on the footboard of his bed, hip cocked, studying the photo in his hand. He looks at his face, scrutinising, then back down. Mingi hadn't even heard him come in. He returns his gaze to the photographs, half-smiling. "Don't lecture me." "I haven't even said anything!" He can still feel him, though, lingering over him like a shadow. After a few moments, Wooyoung seems to give up any non-judgemental pretences and sighs, tired. "Why do you still have this stuff, Mingi?" "You know how in horror movies, when the family realises there's, like, a cursed object in the house, and every time they try to throw it away, it comes back?" Mingi thumbs to the next photo in the stack. Hongjoong must have taken it from his bed. His apartment was barely more than a room with a sink in the corner, but it had beautiful bay windows, and Hongjoong /loved/ it. In the summer, it got so hot that Mingi never wore anything inside. In the photo, he's got one of the windows pushed open, his lanky body bowed over with his head and arms hanging out the window like a dog on a car ride. Across the floor, it's hard to make much out in the shadows, but he can still picture, in a vague and shapeless way, the strewn mess of clothes and takeaway containers that always covered the room. He flips the photo over: /heatwave, some time in july. min sweating it out/. Wooyoung hums. "You know everytime you two got back together, I wanted to kill myself." "Yeah, well." Mingi flips through to the next, then the next. The two of them are in some house he doesn't recognise, one of many parties he can't remember. They're in what looks like a living room, and they're grinning, and he can tell they'd been using by how manic they both look: Hongjoong, holding him too tight, and Mingi with his eyes too wide. "That feeling was all-round mutual." "I just hated watching it. Even in these photos..." Wooyoung leans down, gently takes it from his hand. Hongjoong's written on the back of that one, too, Mingi notices. A /sorry/, nearly illegible, smudged. They must have fought that night. "I don't know," he murmurs. "It's like I can almost smell it." Mingi huffs, looking over when his friend drops to a crouch. "Smell what?" "How sad you both were then." Wooyoung rolls his tongue against his teeth, hands the photo back and picks up something else from the pile. An old handmade card, /Happy Birthday/ collaged out of magazine cuttings and a kiss stain on the inside. Mingi would replay and replay their kisses in the months after everything fell apart, almost ritualising it, until the memories blurred together and confused themselves. Now all that's left are the way the birds sounded in the tree outside the bay windows, so overgrown it felt like it was eating the apartment alive, and the burning smell of vodka. /I've never wanted someone how I want you/, he's scribbled alongside the kiss. /Thank you for being born/. It wasn't an /I love you/, but it was close. "What would you do if he reached out now?" Wooyoung asks, reading it over with the air of a sombre museum-goer. "If he asked to try again?"
