When we think of school uniforms, we often picture — whether casual or formal — something like a tracksuit or a shirt and jacket, more or less. But in Japan, a style that could be called a "mixed style" uniform caused a serious incident. What is a "mixed style" uniform? Recently, some schoolgirls have been showing up wearing a style regarded as a uniform — a "mix" of the official shirt, jacket, skirt, and the pants from the official tracksuit.

Recent research -- "Universal early childhood education and adolescent risky behavior" (Ando, Mori, & Yamaguchi, 2025) -- found that early childhood education in Japan had a significant positive effect on reducing risky behavior in adolescence, like juvenile crime and teenage pregnancy. Thanks to the preschool reform, rates of juvenile violent arrests and teenage pregnancies dropped by 34% and 17%, respectively, compared to pre-reform averages.
