atproto is just the protocol, so any other appview could provide the same service as bsky, delivering data from pds to users, and having their own control over filtering which users are or aren't seen. the bsky team have their own appview to demonstrate atproto, but that's not unique to bsky to do

you could host your own data on your own pds, but everyone using the bsky appview would be beholden to the bsky team's choice of which users data gets processed through that appview for people to read their posts and interact and so on.

this means that the owners of the bsky appview have authority over which users get to be served by it, and presumably some other things but just to be clear here, im nowhere near close to an expert on atproto stuff.

in terms of what it actually means for the user? im pretty sure its basically the service provider. by default, your account data could be stored on the bsky PDS and then your access to the atproto network provided by the bsky appview

i overheard regular ol people in my (Chicago) apartment lobby just openly stating pure vitriol towards ICE, and even saying stuff that sounded a lot like pro-revolution sentiment. i do get the feeling that the trump administration has wildly overplayed its hand here
