30% national approval would still mean 65% of Republicans support him. That is a death sentence for a primary. One of our many problems is that the primary system is encouraging radicalism both on campaign and in office.

Hasan: The great irony is of course that Donald Trump is the son of an immigrant. The grandson of an immigrant and married to an immigrant. In fact two of his three wives were immigrants, proving yet again that immigrants will do the jobs that even Americans are not willing to do.
Like the, ah, Civil Rights Act for example? I hope major reform is more than a pipe dream because so many are necessary just to stay afloat. It will require brave and foresighted Congressmen, and they seem a rare breed these days.
Do people really believe this? How bizarre. Like, the revolution STARTS over spontaneous bread riots but then the organizers with their plans come in and direct it in their desired direction. Otherwise you topple the regime and find a Caesar take its place.
The question is how you do this. Could it be passed by federal law? Or would it need a constitutional amendment? If it’s a law what’s to prevent it being undo e? If an amendment how do you get it approved by the states?

Jeffries: "I remind all of these corrupt individuals, these sycophants -- the statute of limitations is five years. The American people want accountability, deserve accountability, and will get accountability."
So nice to see reading comprehension thriving in these dark times.
Mate, the mockery will continue until the elected pols’ behavior improves. But if you read the definition THAT YOU PROVIDED it has no relevance to any of this.
This is always such a complex issue and one that almost requires two minds. On the one hand I do believe in certain universal values. One the other hand, if I stood up and said “slavery is bad” it means nothing because it comes at no social cost. If someone in the 1820s South said it they are heroes
Hakeem Jeffries: “The massacre of unarmed protestors by masked paramilitary gunmen is just a distraction from the rising food prices”.
Nein. Wir ist ein rachestaat.
The problem of course is that we are not the ones who have the power to stop it, short of surrender.
Late arrival! Tis a fantastic show.
This is a surprise as I would have expected the opposite (are they the ones making up the 41% of Trump-voting college educated?). Wonder what they think of RFK.
We absolutely have the capability, the only question is building the political will on a long term basis. If anyone can break things badly enough to provoke that it’s Trump. But it won’t happen on its own: we need to make clear why disaster. Too many people think history just happens on its own.
Funny. All my emails in column two have been warning me AGAINST checking for AI because I can’t prove it. Only time I managed to punish a student for it was when he got lazy and forgot to remove “Generated by ChatGPT” from the bottom.
They clearly internalized the idea that they represent the silent majority and that 250 years of liberalism is a blip. The infuriating thing is that this is so extreme any decent Dem should have an easy time presenting themselves as true Americans. But they don’t because they’ve internalized it too.
It’s such a bizarre combo: shrink the state and give the state autocratic power. Seeing it in practice it occurs to me that the führerprinzip cuts a lot of red tape. I’m thinking “small state” Conservatives will come to Jesus on funding an army of minions so long as they cut depts that block them.
I, of course, have never had students skip MY classes. Although I am amazed at just how many grandparents people have, all dropping dead just before deadlines.
That is quite clearly King Thorin son of Thrain.
I recognize that! British Museum.
I’ve been thinking for a while that fascism is just an illiberal type of revolution. They have the same revolutionary theory of power (lawless and based on the “popular will”) except that instead of a rising class seeking more rights they are a declining class seeking to reassert dominance.
Gotta be honest: I really thought the point at which it would all be too much was well before the armed masked men parading through the streets terrifying and arresting citizens stage. Constantly altering my priors. If military occupation won’t wake people up are they even capable of being woken up?
Trump is absolutely beatable. He is incredibly unpopular and doing unpleasant things openly. The only reason he’s not further behind in popularity is that Dems offer absolutely nothing except not being Trump. And the less they oppose him (verbally if nothing else) even that seems phony.
