I keep my thermostat at 69 degrees, a fan
beside my bed that cools off my sleeping body.
My flesh traps heat like a furnace – stuck

I feel I will molt when the summer ends.
My shell’s cracks will finally split as the leaves turn
yellow and red as the sun that dips
below the horizon by the encroaching dusk. I will emerge
from the shed skin and hair and clothes

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.
