Jacques de Molay, last head of The Templars, was arrested in Paris on Friday 13 October 1307 & burned to death at the stake in the same city seven years later. The French king owed his order money. Hundreds of years later Molay remains a figure of fascination in popular culture.

The bibliography & footnotes refer to quite a few other books that address this subject. I would particularly recommend Barbara Ehrenreich's "Smile Or Die: How Positive Thinking Fooled America and the World" AKA "Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America" (for those in the US).
