A reminder of the 'Teaching With Ovid' symposium - accepting paper and panel proposals through to January! Do you use Ovid in teaching, or do you have an idea you'd like to road-test?

The International Ovidian Society and Soc. Ovidiana (a medieval outfit) have teamed up. All disciplines welcome!

@monicamedhist.bsky.social for the win! This thread is pure awesomeness and a fantastic example of 1) #ImagingProblems 2) what can happen when we deign to imagine the possibility that medieval women (gasp) had thoughts and knowledge and wrote things!
Oh wow! This is what happens when you're photographing MSS & don't capture the text in the inner gutter. 1st, here's the photograph (made about 100 yrs ago) of the Codex Salernitanus, f. 82ra. Although that big tear of the page is obvious, the inner gutter hasn't been fully captured in the photo.

I’m*very* excited The Voynich Puzzle board game has arrived! It might not help me solve the Voynich manuscript (where would be the fun it that?) but it will help me solve the puzzle of what to do on Shabbat and Sunday afternoons w/ our kids 😏

Just found out about this amazing example of #manuscript #recycling . The whole manuscript is made up from the margins of an earlier liturgical manuscript, cut out and rearranged (hence the unusual format), the (mostly) blank margins then used to copy various magical texts in the mid 16th century.

I love visiting a fellow art historian’s home and looking at the bookshelves where the evidence of shared disciplinary foundations are written right there in the near perfect replication of my library in theirs.

It is true: many things were indeed invented in early modernity! It is also true that many things were only “invented” in early modernity because modern historians don’t like reading Latin or Arabic or Greek.

Take a look at this 12th century collection of works by Augustine. It's written in a clear transitional (or protogothic) script by 4 different hands, and is simply decorated with large initials in red. Look for a mend in the parchment! (UPenn Ms. Codex 708) #medievalsky
