“It is a strange irony,” Professor Michael Zander told me yesterday, “that a study that conveys the best available empirical evidence that trial by jury is fit for purpose becomes generally available at a time when trial by jury faces its most severe threat.”

Asking about juries
What can we learn from a major study of the Crown Court 33 years ago?

The right to trial by jury has been a fundamental feature of the British Justice System for over 800 years. Any attempt by the government to undermine this fundamental freedom - a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism - must be opposed
🚨Trial by jury is a cornerstone of our democracy and an essential safeguard against authoritarianism. We must come together - cross party - to stop any attempt by the government to undermine this fundamental freedom

It is a sign of a government that has lost its way, when Jury trials that have protected our liberties for centuries are dismissed as 'tradition for its own sake'...
Trial by jury is not ‘tradition for its own sake’ FFS. It’s the cornerstone of a justice system that USED to be admired around the world.
Why not try honesty?
Lack of money has destroyed the courts.
If you want a decent society YOU. HAVE. TO. PAY. FOR. IT.
I’d love a govt that admitted that.

'Instead, judges alone will decide the law, direct themselves on the law, make their own findings of fact, decide whether an accused person is guilty or not guilty, and then pass sentence. Literally judge, jury and sentencer'

Great to see @joannahs.bsky.social on #politicslive educating politicians on the reality of jury trials and the world criminal lawyers, who should be getting investment ( and medals) not token attacks on our rights ...

Opening line from #VickyYoung on resignation of head of #OBR - 'has the right person resigned?' So the #BBC is blaming #Labour for the leaking of the report! It takes a lot to take me to Bargain Hunt but ....

A reminder of how the BBC covered Boris Johnson's long record of lying, as being a "complicated relationship with the truth".

OK we know that the media are never keen on #Labour governments. We know that this Labour government has not covered itself in glory. But the whole #budget obsession has gone a bit too far. Hundreds are dying in #Asian floods and that gets about 4 minutes on the 10.00 news.
December 1, 2025 at 10:16 PM
When will #BBCNews go back to reporting news instead of repeating the same nonsense about the budget.
#ChrisMason just said he was misled on our behalf. Im sorry viewers are more interested in Gaza, Ukraine, Climate change.

Dear #bbcbreakfast - I dont think the country is talking about how the #budget was handled, just the disappointed media including the #BBC
December 1, 2025 at 8:05 AM
It looks like the media were geared up to attack the #budget and even bring the gov't down. In fact it was rather dull. It looks like all that energy has been redirected to personal attacks on the Chancellor.

Wednesday: Reeves must go because the economy is awful.

Friday: Reeves must go because the economy is less awful than anticipated.

Coming soon: Reeves must go because the economy looks like it is improving but she didn’t do it.

And they wonder why no one reads newspapers any more.

If you look at the ridiculous case studies they dredged up & the desperate attempts to hang Reeves for ‘lying’ about the rationale behind a policy she *did not introduce*, you might work out why right-wing media is straining *not* to talk about the finer detail of her (unremarkable) budget.

Despite my opposition to Starmer's gov't I have finally renewed #LabourParty membership. I have more confidene in the prospect of new direction than in the warring pantomime of Your Party or rather Its My Party (And I'll Cry If I Want To)
