Always interesting to see a journalist turn a long interview into a short punchy piece. My contribution was the result of a 45 minute phone call, and I think it does a good job of avoiding sensationalism and of being on the more positive side of things.

Inside the future of British cities with 'edible houses' and AI governments
IN 100 years, future cities in the UK are unlikely to have flying cars and highways in the sky. But they might flip the script on today’s hometowns – where rental hoppers never really k…

I’m often asked where people can read the stories that come out of my applied science fiction projects.

I've listed them with links here stephenoram.net/blog/2025/10... so you can easily find and choose which to read.

Including the new anthology from the project with Coventry University and DSTL.

Applied Science Fiction – what’s new and where can you find it?

Interesting the scale is all about technology not about civilisation... I'd be wanting to see a trajectory towards a decent civilisation first before even considering this sort of 'trajectory'. If colonisation has taught us anything it's to be wary of unsubtle societies having power (in both senses)
I have to admit to not having read Foundation - are these scales from that? I need to read (on the large TBR pile)...
Thrutopia - grounded, plausible & inspiring route maps from a recognisable present towards a future we’d be proud to leave behind.

Zoefuturism - there are no still moments in life, in nature, in our cosmos; everything (inc. us) is changing in relation to its surroundings, as it all keeps becoming.
I've recently become interested in Thrutopias and Zoefuturism as 'genres' to give a different perspective to the binary temptations of Utopia or Dystopia - either how we get there or acknowledge 'there' is in constant change.
Agree... my angle was that these are the possibilities and it's up to us to make sure we get the future(s) we want (starting with understanding the options and an idea of what we might want). That nuance got a bit lost.

Brain Fruit - order now

“A mind-bending, bio-digital fable that pulses with poetic strangeness. Oram’s Brain Fruit is daring, disorienting, & deeply human.“

500 numbered copies, a design-forward format; not just a story—an experience.

Look what arrived today - my copy of my new novella Brain Fruit. I got #1 of a 500 hand-numbered limited edition from L'il Factory. Totally beautiful with its hessian like hard cover - its a far-future story printed in an old-fashioned way.

Due on 1 Sept '25

Thanks Gareth. I'm in touch with the designer and the publisher. If it is a mistake, hopefully not too much reputational damage has been done.
Hi. Can you @interzone.press say where you got the information from that Cybersalon Press have used AI generated cover art? As an editor of 2 anthologies I know a lot of effort went into avoiding that. I would like to see the evidence before taking this up with the publisher. Thank you.
I have a new post on substack with an idea on how to reduce carbon footprint - with genuine questions about how feasible it is.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Is our convenience burning the planet?
Do we really need immediate access to our all of our photos and emails?

Thoughtful review by Kevin W Molin, librarian @Roehampton Library
