What to sow in October 🌱

A list of some of the edibles you can sow now, undercover in polytunnels etc & also outside.

Outdoor sowings will benefit from crop protection if the weather is cold, stormy, very wet

🍂 Homestead harvests - late September 🥙

Some of the fruit, veg & herbs growing here on my plot on a hill in west Wales. Some outside, others such as the watermelon and aubergines in polytunnels. Sloes foraged down my lane.

Food for dinners this week & preserving for meals throughout the winter

I'll be talking about no dig gardening and, uniquely for the festival, will be accompanied by my son Ruairi, a mycologist, who can answer specific soil fungi questions.

Next week Ruairi is moving to Scotland, to start a PhD in mycorrhizal fungi and agroforestry 🍄‍🟫

I've seen it used before, but it's still a good idea. My sundew lives in the house where it eats tiny flies.

Breakfast this morning - I fancied a treat and we have so many raspberries just now.

Homemade waffles including our duck eggs, fresh homegrown raspberries and 🍁 maple syrup. Yum.

What do you like to put on waffles?

🧹 Before anyone gets the urge to tell me to ignore the cleaning, honestly it really needs doing. I’m sure those “clean if you must” memes are written by folk who have others doing their chores.

Served with some organic rye sourdough to mop up the juices, it includes tomatoes, onions, garlic, garlic scapes, cumin, smoked paprika, chilli, kale, thyme, oregano, parsley broad beans, sweet potato, olive oil, sea salt and black pepper.

Whilst influenced by shakshuka, this is not an authentic recipe 🍳 I included fridge leftovers into the mix, herbs from the garden & a kale picked this morning.

🍅I used tinned cherry tomatoes. Mine are not ripe yet 🥫Later in the summer I freeze bags of cherry tomatoes, which are ideal for this dish.

Having realised that the pixies do not come at night to do the housework, and with a long list of writing and editing work to do today as well as the chores, I decided to make a hearty breakfast.

🥚The ducks are laying with enthusiasm so this was made with recycled slugs!!🦆

I've started a newsletter on Substack - this is my very first post so it's an introduction to me, something about what I do and what the newsletter will be about.

There'll be regular posts, and it would be lovely if you'd like to subscribe
