Hey did you know that the two most productive people I have ever had on my teams have been people I was told to fire for performance reasons?

This is why it’s so important to:
1) hear context from previous managers but not anchor to it
2) give people clear feedback and give them a chance

I’m going to take it easy. We’re all doing this life thing for the first time.

The final piece of advice I would like to give to new folks tonight is that Bluesky will be what you make of it. When I came over from the former Twitter, I resolved to be more kind to others here than I was over there. That choice has made being here so much better. Keep it in mind for yourself.

Career progression is all about impact, and that increasingly requires a larger scope than any codebase can offer. Open source contributions were my cheat code, which allowed me to keep coding while moving up the ladder, and make an industry impact. Same activities, different impact.

A reminder of corporate greed where value-creating-workers are squeezed harder and harder to give even more money to pure-speculating-investors!

I have to be honest. If this Bluesky thing ends up like the tech-twitter I grew up (professionally) with, I may be sharing more of what I do again. The other side is growingly becoming a bit claustrophobic for me with all the extremism, no one seems to be able to agree to disagree anymore.

The type of work I do leading Core infra for Google is stressful and can be high stakes, so just having something of my own that’s 100% play and exploration is so cathartic

Confession: Today I betrayed software engineers everywhere by

A) admitting I could fix a family member’s printer, and then
B) fixing it

All I can be is sorry, and that is all I am.

Stick to boring architecture for as long as possible, and spend the majority of your time, and resources, building something your customers are willing to pay for.

If you’re new on Bluesky here’s a quick video how to set your username to a domain you own

You can also buy a new domain through Bluesky which helps fund the company and network

Keep investing in your own website. Best long term investment there is 👍

Bsky is the closest to an “open web” social network which gives me hope it’ll be more resilient than others

I had the reservations so I finally let Twitter go. It's painful to leave behind a quarter million followers but I'm ready to rebuild under my own handle and soon hosting my own data.

Hopefully this means never having to start over again.

Advocating that tech conferences start including Bluesky accounts on profile pages and badges is already working!
I need to add it to the code for the devopsdays website! I’ll do it today :)

You were born with a super computer the tech industry is spending trillions trying to replicate. Train your own model. Put that real intelligence to work.

Blocking and safety aren’t nice to haves- they’re critical user features for social media.

The scales may have tipped towards Bluesky for me in this moment. I want to be safe, I want my friends to be safe.
Bluesky has the best blocking experience of any social media, hands down. When you block someone, all your interaction goes away, so all the effort jerks put into trolling goes away as well. They hate that. Also, I block quicker and more dispassionately here, so my "chud" experience here is minimal.
