The connection point is two thin copper strips. With expansion and contraction, the two strips separate slowly over time. The space creates an arc, the arc creates heat and the cycle continues until failure. With three wires, use a wire nut to pigtail into a single.

That receptacle also had “back-stabbed” connections, this is another big hazard that will be exacerbated by using a space heater.

It causes unnecessary heat due to the lighter gauge connections on the cords/strips. It’s hot enough to melt the plastic and eventually catch fire.

I’m telling my customers and I’ll tell y’all too. Space heater season is here. Never plug one into an extension cord, plug strip or surge protector. If the receptacle you’re plugging into is loose or shows burns, it needs replacing. If the cord gets hot or smells weird, throw it out!
