And nuance is really difficult to discuss 300 characters at a time, when people you're "arguing" with don't want to hear it, and people who agree with you are part of the echo chamber. Nuanced takes appear now & then, but they don't fit with the narratives people build, so they're few & far between.

Hot take: Social media has dumbed down the discussion to the point where conservatives think anything that isn't completely inoffensive is bad. Meanwhile progressives clap back with "fiction ≠ reality" as a catch-all, but change their tune when you bring up something like racism. It requires nuance.

Add to that the nuance of if the actual *author* is harming people with the proceeds of their art, and this gets to be a sticky question really fast. I will never spend money on or read HP. I don't think others should either. Should I use the racism in the books to justify this? Or is it separate?

For one, I think people get caught up in the divide between the art itself and IRL effects. It requires a lot of media literacy and nuance that often gets erased from discussions. Is this *art* hurting people? Does another domestic violence romance or racist MC add to IRL systemic violence/-isms?

Fun fact about the Salvation Army: they use a form of substance use treatment called work therapy. Oh, and by treatment, I mean they have people who have been convicted of drug charges work for their stores & warehouses in exchange for room, board, around a $1 a week, and minimal actual therapy.
