I have a few reptile pets, but Hoggy was the only one I went out looking for in order to buy him. Most of my other reptiles are rescues or rehomes, but Hoggy was special. I’m heart broken and beating myself up for the small husbandry mistake that started this. I’m gonna miss you Hoggy…

This morning, I woke up to find that Hoggy, my hognose snake, had passed after his battle with bacterial infections. He was a very special snake to me. I’ve loved hognose since I learned about them in a field guide. I got him 5 years ago and I never did figure out why he stayed so small.

I've found that these Marbled Orbweavers (Araneus marmoreus) are rather skittish and easily startled back to their hide from the web. I was excited to get a photo of this one out in its web in Shannon County, Missouri in late August. #Arachtober #arachtober2025 #spider 🕷️

#Arachtober 12 - Small Grass Lynx #Spider with huge egg sac. Lynx spiders guard their eggs but I wonder why it was at the end of a leaf. Lynxes don't carry their egg sac, but some will move them if necessary. Looks like Oxyopes acleistus, I think. South Texas USA #macrophotography #naturephotography

Cardinal jumper’s are mimics of mutillid wasps (like velvet ants). This one was came out of hiding to see the camera

Spider features red orange coloration on dorsal side and grey ventral size. Fuzzy like the velvet ants that they mimic. Spider waits for pollinator to visit red zinnia flower (not yet in bloom)

For #Arachtober, here is a spider that's not a spider. It's Petrophila jaliscalis, a jumping-spider-mimicking moth - see the face-on spider pattern, with orange legs and sparkly dark eyes? I love finding these - I think they breed in my small goldfish pond, because the caterpillars are aquatic. 🌿🐙

A striped fishing spider (Dolomedes scriptus) shot so that the spider is facing the bottom right of frame. They’re gripping the edge of tree roots with their back legs while the rest of the body rests on the water and algae awaiting prey. They have a tan body with a thick white band outlining their cephalothorax and abdomen. Their abdomen has chevron stripes.

🐍Young black-headed cat snake (Boiga nigriceps).

Max. size 175 cm (5'9").

Venomous.

Mostly arboreal.

Eats birds, frogs, lizards and mammals.

Found in rainforests in Borneo, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand.

Considered Least Concern by the IUCN.

Yesterday I posted a male nursery web spider, today a female. Pisuara mirabilis. These are lovely spiders and I often seem them in gardens where there is a little bit of wild space. #Arachtober

Different species of wolf spider from yesterday. Far more common around here in South Texas, USA. Yet they don't have a common name. I can find bunches of these in my yard most any night.

This is a nursery web spider, Pisaura mirabilis. They build a we in bushes or low grass and the mother guards the babies for the first few days of their lives. This one is a male though and despire the cream stripe is well camouflaged. #Arachtober

Yellow version of the White-banded Crab Spider, Misumenoides formosipes. Flower is Euthamia or Solidago, I think.
