there's more of a focus on "just" the bible as a source of doctrine and since the latter half of the bible is pretty apocalyptic (this is because apocalyptic literature was in vogue at the time) well. Yeah

in my mind i think it has to do with the strain of protestantism that took off over there having the hardline "you can only be saved through faith (not good deeds)" take. so you lose your grip on reality super fast

i had to add the second part because i realized too quickly what was the childhood example that made me like this trope forever and it's the Delightful Children From Down the Lane
i don't see it a lot but "gruff character All Cleaned Up, framed as a horror thing" is so good. plus points if it isn't even brainwashing or mind control they just kinda decided to do that (under duress perhaps but it's a grave they've decided to finish digging themselves)
