On the plane to the Portland Retro Game Expo. Wish us luck...

Come watch me make a fool of myself and try to beat the World Record speedrun in Space Quest I — and, also, wish Scott Murphy a happy birthday. Premiering in a few minutes! www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB8X...
Can I beat the World Record in Space Quest I?

Jones in the Fast Lane is a great game. But I don't recall ever making this "snake devouring its prey" face over it.

Casual shoutout to this mutant girl losing her shit over Jones in the Fast Lane on the cover of the 1990 Sierra fall catalogue.
A drawn image of a young girl excitedly holding a game box with her mouth unnaturally agape.

Remember when Photoshop had the rudimentary 3D lighting tool? I miss that *so much.* I used it all the time when cooking up background art for my dumb adventure game projects. It made everything look twice as cool.

Oh yeah. I got lucky and got in on the "Photography plan" where Photoshop is very discounted, but of course they're axing that plan for future customers now. And PS is *monstrously* slow, too. The only reason I'm still on PS is because of the "magic select" features.

This is one of those rare occasions where both are indispensable and can get absolutely fucked at the same time.

Beautiful! I especially love the details in the tree leaves.

Maybe some soft animated ripples in the ocean would sell the water effect? IIRC Monkey Island 1 got away with just having some small horizontal lines fade in and out.

640x480 12 fps with low-poly, pre-rendered 3D needs to make a comeback. It's the new pixel art. What I love to call #InterplayJank.

Off the top of my head: Dude could write the foreword.

Well, it's not as repulsive as the Talk icon in Simon the Sorcerer 2, but you're getting there. 😁
A hideous pixel icon of an open mouth with yellow teeth and the upper lip curled in a sort of Elvis snarl.
spacequesthistorian.com
Oh god, the yellow teeth in the Talk icon... 😅

A bit sad I can't be there myself. AdvX holds a special place in my juice pumper. I hope they continue to put on the event for years to come.

(Mac emulators, we're looking at you. 😏)

(Although I'm told it's gotten a lot better.)

DOSBox and ScummVM don't make you suffer. Suffering should be for the people who choose to. Not everything has to be a challenge, especially not when it comes to emulation.

And those are indeed fun excursions if you're into that sort of thing, but it is also a HUGE barrier for people who just want to play the games.
spacequesthistorian.com
Yup, I've had that happen. I tried starting a new game by myself so I could gather some shit and get us started for future play, and I ended up in the fucking desert.

The first time my son and I tried Survival on Peaceful, we spawned in a swamp. That was horrible as well.

Whoa! Experimental Win95/98 support? This is going to be a gamechanger for finally cracking the shell around "the Dark Ages" of PC gaming.
spacequesthistorian.com
Why don't you still play? Did they outgrow it?
spacequesthistorian.com
I've never liked survival games but playing Minecraft with my son is an absolute blast. We work so well together. He's the brains of the operation and I'm the hunter/gatherer. He knows all the recipes and I'm the one who goes out and gathers resources.
