Brisbane's volunteer bicycle user groups, advocating for a better city for everyone, one bikeway and safe street at a time!
We were delighted to meet Gregory Andrews, at AlterCOP30 who rode his e-bike from Canberra to Brisbane to attend.
Gregory has tagged his ride #eBike4Australia and explained the journey it's a statement about climate action and a safe and positive future for our kids and Country.

Mayors play a crucial role in addressing the climate crisis.

By reclaiming public space from the private property of cars, mayors can cut pollution, revive civic interaction, enhance public safety, and expand green space.

But only if they're willing to take on entrenched interests.
“Globally, despite extreme heat, floods and devastating wildfires, populist leaders, some sceptical but others in outright denial about the science, are talking up the costs of action rather than the consequences of inaction.”

It’s almost Halloween so we dug up Brenda Bones for what we hope will be the last time to check progress on the Viola Place to Schneider Road Bikeway connection. It looks like riders at Brisbane Airport will still be getting a trick on Friday, but a treat won’t be too far into the future!!

Lessons from Vancouver on the value of city leadership, keeping "bikelash" in perspective, and transforming into a bicycle-friendly city.
When newly-elected Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson started converting car lanes to bike lanes in 2009, pundits claimed it was political suicide. In 2018, he stepped down after three terms as the longest-serving mayor in the city's history. So what can this tale teach us about so-called "bikelash"?🧵

Woohoo! Confirmation from Brisbane City Council (via the media) one footpath on the Story Bridge will be open again tomorrow (Friday)!

Council are now saying "The latest expert advice confirmed the footpaths could last another two to five years”. Then why close both footpaths with no notice?

This morning the Story Bridge Bike Bus crew celebrated the 150th bike bus journey with party hats, cake and sparklers.

The 8am bike bus has been a great community initiative to get people across the bridge safely after BCC suddenly closed active transport access.

Celebrating World Car-Free Day on Herschel St this morning, with a pop-up protected bikelane. Our lane took a few minutes to install, was cheap and effective. Hope Brisbane City Council was watching to see how well the lane worked.

Pop-up bikelane on Herschel St for World Car-Free Day

After Council gave a non-committal response to our 800-signature petition, we intend to show how easy it would be to install a protected bikelane on Herschel for people to ride between the Bicentennial Bikeway, the CBD and northern suburbs.

Congratulations to Story Bridge Active Travel Alliance for keeping the Story Bridge Bike Bus rolling. Wednesday 24th September will be the 150th bike bus ride. You can join the bike bus 8am at Scott St, Kangaroo Pt

Warning to riders on the Boondal Wetlands path, Brisbane North BUG has reported that timber has completely rotted under the boardwalk down from the old dump hill approaching Nudgee Road. Some of the planks have detached, as shown in the photos. Brisbane City Council has been notified.

The bike bus is still rolling across the Story Bridge. Good on them keeping this great initiative going for months while we wait for the footpath to be fixed.

Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam."

This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s.

Many of the cities we admire made better choices regarding cars in the past. and are still making better choices today.

Better choices instead of excuses.

Despite inclement weather this morning the Story Bridge Bike Bus rolled out taking people on riding safely across the bridge to work. The bike bus leaves Kangaroo Point each morning at 8am, but not this Wednesday which is the Brisbane Show holiday. #StoryBridgeBikeBus

It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Bike-lanes mean business.

We are doing lower speed limits & smarter design too. It's not enough!

The problem in the U.S. is personal behavior and a dysfunctional driving culture that has normalized bad driving, distraction, and selfishness. Unless we spend billions on infrastructure, our only hope is to look in the mirror.
“Helsinki has not recorded a single traffic fatality in the past 12 months, city and police officials confirmed this week.”

City engineer credits lower speed limits and smart design.

The #StoryBridgeBikeBus rolled across the bridge again this morning, thanks to the Story Bridge Active Transport Alliance for keeping Brisbane moving. The bike bus can’t take scooters or pedestrians sadly. We need Council to dedicate a lane on the bridge for pedestrians, scooters and bikes.

Courier Mail journalist, Elodie Jakes, nervously joined the Story Bridge Active Travel Alliance bike bus recently.

She wrote: “I had a new-found appreciation for Brisbane cyclists, riding in this city is not easy and I can recognise how frustrating it is when a crucial bike path was taken away.”

The bikeway and pedestrian path between the Goodwill Bridge and Waterline Park at Gardens Point is closed today and Monday and Tuesday next week for works. The diversion along Mangrove Walk seems to be working well. The works will be completed at the end of next week.

Yesterday, without fanfare, the protected bikeway on Melbourne St, South Brisbane was finally opened!

Of course we'd like to see it extended to Boundary St and into West End, but for the moment we're celebrating getting this far! Thanks to those in Brisbane City Council who made this happen.

On Sunday we visited Turnstyle Community Bike Shed, which has a library of tools, bike parts and consumables that are available to use in a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
Turnstyle is at 20 TJ Doyle Memorial Drive, Dutton Park, open every Sunday from 10 am to 12 noon.

Davies Park at West End has a new bike rack thanks to Councillor Trina Massey. The Farmers-markets bike rack was overflowing on market days. The new racks are a better design for cargo bikes and bikes with panniers. The new rack on Riverside Dr is already popular and well used.
