This image was a variation sheet done while doing concepts for Netflix Shadow & Bone.

The main creature was called ‘The Volcra’. Color adds storytelling depth, with bright tones signaling toxicity or danger & earthy hues indicating camouflage or adaptation.

Oviraptor speed paint

I love speed painting in Procreate on the iPad. almost as much as using real paint.

Speed painting is excellent for creature design because it encourages rapid idea generation and creative exploration without overthinking details.

Silhouettes are essential in creature design because they provide a clear & immediate understanding of the creature's shape & identity. A strong silhouette ensures that the design is recognizable & memorable, even from a distance or when viewed in low detail.
