A lot of American liberals think that “working class” refers to a loose association of manufacturing, construction, agriculture, and certain service jobs like taxi drivers. They just don’t picture waiters and retail workers when they hear the phrase “working class,” and assume this to be reality

It’s partly just that Cuomo’s behavior is so bad that it never seems like a low blow to bring it up. It’s impossible to frame his problems as some kind of momentary lapse in judgment. He’s just spent years of his life being an asshole without any sign of remorse

I understand that your defensive of your profession, but I have spent most of my life up till now in educational institutions and be told that I don’t know how they work because I made a mild criticism of one of the things they do

I remember taking a personality test that gave me a bunch of suggested career paths. In hindsight, that was a waste of my time and the school’s. Other career prep aspects of school were more valuable but my position is that we could actually do with less of it.

I’m sorry, but I have been to school and I remember thinking these exercises were stupid. It’s ok if you think they have a positive impact on students but I am doubtful of their value

Implicitly, Emmanuel is supporting the philosophy that schools ought to be job placement factories rather than places where students learn to think and be mindful citizens. I think this is wrongheaded

I mean, the implicit message is that schools aren’t doing this enough, and I think it’s kind of silly to begin with. Maybe schools should consider a kid’s future somewhat, but it’s really none of the school’s business what some kid wants to do with his life

Seems like another way to pawn off responsibility on the students. It’s not our job to provide opportunities for meaningful labor, it’s your job to find or make some. It also just gives the student an incentive to lie

I’ve read accounts where people try to take herbal remedy type shit seriously, because people do genuinely turn to alternative medicine because they can’t afford real care sometimes. But even those accounts tend to conclude that this is basically all a scam

These guys desperately want to be accepted for “who they really are” and it’s actually the case that they really are not interesting or attractive, and they are rarely even nice

To add to this, they force themselves to be heard. Everybody knows what these men think, often against their will. These men have to believe that their loneliness is a political issue in itself, that people who don’t like them “just haven’t gotten to know me yet,” but the opposite is true
