The borders at Ripon Walled Garden are planted to provide interest long after the flowers have faded. This is one part of our classroom for Ripon Evolve students studying practical horticulture at the Walled Garden. Real projects, hard work, professional standards.
I do like the autumn-flowering Saxifraga fortunei forms. This is ‘Autumn Tribute’ from Aberconwy Nursery, a dwarf form with pink flowers. Like all of this species, whilst hardy, the flowers and leaves are not and will turn black with the first hard frost. #fairviewyearround
The fluffy seed heads of the wood asters look fabulous at this time of year. 1. Eurybia x herveyi 2. E.divaricata, E.x herveyi and E.schreberi. #fairviewyearround
A little sun before the rain saw the autumn snowdrops open. Galanthus reginae-olgae ‘Tessera’ should have 4 outer and 4 inner tepals, but only a few flowers are showing this characteristic. #fairviewyearround
I have been very impressed with this lovely little hybrid ‘aster’ that was a chance seedling found by Dr Hugh McAllister at Ness Botanic Gardens. Symphyotrichum ‘Small-Ness’ is all you want from a Michaelmas daisy. Offered by some nurseries as ‘Little-Ness’. #fairviewyearround
