UN and partners distributed hundreds of thousands of hot meals and bread bundles – in the south and in the north.

Cooking gas entered the Strip. More tents for displaced families, frozen meat, fresh fruit, flour and medicines also crossed into Gaza throughout day.

The consequences of the massive destruction in the Gaza Strip will not simply disappear with the release of the hostages. Thousands more will die of hunger and disease. And I don't see Israel doing anything about it.

Trump knows this but is ok collecting a "W" in the near term, and all the concessions the US gave to Qatar and the rest of the Arab world to make this happen aren't coming out of his personal checkbook.

Israel knows this. The US administration knows this, the Arabs know this too. Israel is ok with this because it gives them an offramp from two years of ground combat with two more years of heavy fighting promised without a deal, and (in theory) returns the living hostages.

Hamas isn't going to lay down its arms and embrace peace, it's not going to cease having a role in Palestinian governance of the Gaza Strip. It is going to case up its green flag for a bit, regroup, bask in its role as folk heros, and then start making bombs and siphoning off UN money again.
