So then all the objectifying images in the substance just felt like they were punching down rather than actually doing anything meaningful. Because its protagonist isn’t a person, instead of feeling what she feels, the horror is just the existence of a woman becoming old.

Smile 2 has a deeply flawed and unreliable narrator but you see her as a person rather than “someone who’s motives are so genuinely unhinged it transcends humanity in any recognizeable form and reaches concept alone” like the character in the substance.

I finally figured out why The Substance left such a bad taste in my mouth thanks to Smile 2. They’re both very similar narratives but the substance doesn’t treat its main character like a person, which makes its treatment of her feel mean spirited and objectifying.

You spend as much time walking or biking to places as you spend in the US. Cars don’t make things faster they just eliminate the exercise and make infrastructure arbitrarily way larger and more difficult to navigate. Cars really shouldn’t be in cities
