David Lynch being in the #Emmys in memoriam broke something in me. He embodies so much of the medium’s potential that it’s almost impossible to think about him in the past tense.

If I were queen of the world I would institute a rule that you must decide whether or not to cancel a show BEFORE they film the season finale.

OR if you cancel a show after a cliffhanger finale you must allow the showrunner to write & release a summary of what was going to happen & what it meant.

The Pitt went into mass casualty mode this week with its best episode yet. I wrote about all the ways this great show celebrates the power of people who know what they're doing:
In Praise of 'The Pitt' Episode 12 and People Who Know What They're Doing
A shooting at a music festival challenges the ED doctors to rise to the occasion — and makes for an hour of sensational, gripping television.

You might say 2024 was a bit of a disappointing year. But some of its best series were ABOUT disappointment in impressive, jarringly healthy ways.

I wrote about the year in TV for @newrepublic.com — thanks for reading, friends! newrepublic.com/article/1882...
TV’s Year of Big Disappointments
Some of this year’s TV felt distinctly deflated. But the very best shows took on the subject of disappointment itself.

This is great work.

Another way to say these businesses are “erasing progress” is that they are re-segregating. The latter more pointedly gets at what’s at stake.
Exclusive here from Bloomberg News, which asked 84 of the biggest listed US companies to share their demographics data with us. We found that Black workers are losing share, all but erasing the progress they made after the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.
