Sex scenes are almost never "gratuitous" or "unnecessary." You learn things about characters and relationships during sex that you can't really learn any other way, such as whether they're into fisting.

it is my fifth playthrough and i only just found out byleth turns into a fucking lobster if you cook her in the sauna for too long. she's emitting steam. i'm crying
