Just added KML import to SimonLikesMaps. Does anyone use it for their route planning? For me it is useful when working with the MapRun app for planning the couple of SpunchUK events I've done. Be good to know if/how others use it. #running #cycling #orienteering #maps #kml

Well, we promised a follow-up for #MapMonday to the fascinating London Ringways #Map for another major city in Great Britain, so here it is...

The Greater Glasgow Transportation Study from 1968.

Descent stats possibly more useful for kayaking/canoeing - quite a different ride to drop 134m versus 341m over 43.3km. Especially as this section contains the washing machine! Try tweaking these smoothing for this route here: www.simonlikesmaps.com/share/6oJlfL

This canoe route down the Spey is downhill, but the elevation profile shows some ascent due to errors in the underlying data and how well the route is drawn. You can try to correct these using the smoothing tool - results shown in s/shot. #canoeing #kayaking #running #cycling #maps #routes

I think when I did that aroads widget (back in 2020, partly to learn more about Overpass Turbo) SABRE did not have this but I just had a go and it is really good now - super quick! I'd been wondering what to do with aroads (old Vue2, old Bing API) so I think it is time to turn it off.

Next up I'll be at beautiful Pavilion Gardens in Buxton for their Artist and Designer Fair, 8th - 9th November from 10-16:30 both days. I've got fresh new pots from the wood kiln to show, hope to see you there!

Hi Sabre - thanks for the repost. I like your work too and have spent a bit of time reading your forums. I have another hobby project which I think you might like - aroads.onrender.com

Bing Maps has finally removed Ordnance Survey maps and SimonLikesMaps is seeing lots of new users arrive, I think from people searching on Google for an alternative. So yes - a free source of the OS maps at www.simonlikesmaps.com However if it gets too busy I'll hit a quota limit.

A while ago I made geodesy.onrender.com as a fast search engine and visualiser for the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Registry. It needs a bit of TLC - upgrade to latest data and BingMaps replacing. But is anyone using it / is it useful? Would be good to know! #GIS #geodetic #maps #projections #EPSG

Other differences in elevation profiles creep in because of (1) how accurately the track is drawn or recorded (2) how the software then uses the track to sample the DEM. No wonder all apps and watches give different results.

Here's three elevation profiles of one of my Sunday long runs, each rendered using one of the Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in SimonLikesMaps. Differences creep in because of how each DEM survey measured the Earth differently. #running #walking #cycling #planning #DEM #elevation

A silver lining to the demise of Bing Maps API: replacing it with newer, better things. Coming soon: more accurate elevation data from @opentopography.org via www.elevationapi.com ... making for better route planning at simonlikesmaps.com #hiking #walking #cycling #running #skiing #skitouring

Done for today. Making the root domain work needs a new DNS host, that's now in progress so I'll carry on with that in 3 days or so once the internet's caught up.

Now working on the root domain to make simonlikesmaps.com also go to the new code / new EU server...
March 30, 2025 at 12:20 PM
And new.simonlikesmaps.com should now be running in the EU. If it is not working for you, try www.simonlikesmaps.com or wait for your internet provider to catch up or let me know here.

Done! www.simonlikesmaps.com should be up and running - new code, new server, same route planning. If you can't see it yet then it might be that your internet provider is waiting for the DNS update.

Launch day... SLM is moving from Oregon to the Netherlands and the new one will take over the www address from the old one. It'll be down for a couple of hours. If you see any issues with your route planning after that, let me know...

Recently fixed a bug in the OpenSnowMap overlay. It's useful for planning offpiste / touring. Here's some recent planning I did in Les Arcs. IGN topo map, with pistes and lifts overlaid, and my route in red. Steep gradients highlighted in red on the elevation profile. #skiing #freeride #touring

SLM runs on @railway.com which was running on Google Cloud Platform and could only offer Oregon-based hosting for my small usage tier. So, I am excited to read about their own Railway Metal - I will be able to go non-Google and be based in Amsterdam - a better match for a mostly EU-west userbase.
