Feel like I’m contradicting myself but his mentality here was a contradiction in itself. He wanted the Garleans to suffer but when he grew older he realized that wasn’t the path forward which is why he canonically helped the Garleans in the end despite having a grudge against them

He wanted revenge and he needed to clear a way forward for himself.

He doesn’t necessarily regret it, he just realized that killing the people that hurt him won’t bring his loved ones back, and he had to approach the situation differently

When he first killed someone he didn’t think much of it considering the reasoning and anger he was feeling. He still thinks about it to this day, but doesn’t feel too much regret.

He knew that his journey would require him to make unthinkable choices, and he accepted the consequences. >
