I’m not entirely sure why I indulge in this vice every month. Perhaps it’s to gain more understanding or clarity as to why people do this as a habit. Or maybe I have a newfound thrill of taking stupid risks after playing it safe my whole life. Who knows? I’m here for a good time, not a long time 🪦

Based on what I’ve briefly learned, “daughter of Pele” is a compliment that was rooted in a superficial meaning, but I now accept and embody on a spiritual level. I accept the honorific not primarily because I can relate to and identify with a few of her traits, but for the (6/7)

it’s amazing to me that she is not feared, but rather widely respected and revered by native Hawaiians and keepers of her story. Truly, the juxtaposition of her fiery temper and nature, and her tender care for land and life is nothing short of respectable. She IS the woman, the myth, and the (5/7)

but her indomitable spirit escaped to the Big Island, and she made a volcanic crater her home. She’s gracious enough to occasionally to take the form of a young woman in a red muumuu (inspiration for the Painted Lady in ATLA?) to warn locals of impending eruptions.

I was not prepared for the diversity of the legends surrounding her origins and her life. The complexities certainly add to the cultural reverence, almost to the point of humility on my part.

Someone in my life jokingly referred to me as the “daughter of Pele.” My knowledge of her at the time was rudimentary and extremely limited, so I simply went with it. This description has popped up in my head more frequently recently, and stoked my curiosity about the goddess herself. Honestly (1/7)
