Authority Commissioner Atlas Altair of the Enforcement Unit, at six feet and five inches tall, towers over a podium while addressing a crowd of over 2,000 people. He speaks of the rise of insomnia the past few moon cycles and that it's begun to cause irritability in those it affects.

While he’s no doctor or scientist, Commissioner Altair, with the strong timbre in his voice, recommends the use of medication to help alleviate the effects of insomnia.

But what about those unable to afford sleep aids?

A reporter raises his hand to ask that very question. The Commissioner scratches the stubble on his chin and says, “In my personal experience, most insomniacs’ll work themselves up n tire themselves out.”

Chatter among the crowd rumbles out as several hands from the front row rocket into the air immediately.

The noise fades out as the voice of a newscaster rolls in. The view becomes overcome with static for a few seconds. A child sits on the couch in silence, watching his mother hit her fist repeatedly over the top of the television.

She curses. “Pay all this money for this piece a’ junk and for what?”

The child, whose large blue eyes flicker back to the fuzzy screen, asks aloud,

“Does Dad get that way too?”

“Huh?”

“Like that Authority Member said,” he clarifies. “Does he?”

The mother stands upright. “Everyone does,” she answers after a while. “It’s normal to tire yourself out after staying awake for too long.”

The final rays of light duck below the horizon as the sun officially begins its retreat. The Sky’s Fabric holds a few bright and twinkling Stars that are visible now that the sun is gone. The air has a chill to it as the sun’s warmth is nowhere to be found.

Maia breathes outwards, watching the visible puff of air flow out until it dissipates around the view of the thirteenth moon sitting out tonight. It is large, full, and glows with a silvery hue as the paradise enters its Silver Moon cycle. She stares at the illuminated moon in awe before she notices that Malik and Clare are almost an entire foot ahead of her.

She jogs up behind them. “Hey, why’re we walking so fast? My legs still feel like jelly, hold on!”

Malik shrugs while Clare, who continues to speed walk, says, “I need to get to my car. I have to see if it’s okay.”

“Isn’t it just a company car, though?” Malik asks.
“Even if it’s not okay, the lab can take care of it, right?”

“No, it is indeed my car. The lab only pays for the stardust to keep it running,” she explains.
“Now hurry, please. I don’t want them to get even a single scratch on it!”

Took a break after finishing my second draft, so it's nice to look through this again with fresh eyes 😊

A week passes since The Sandman’s arrest, and for the first time since then, Maia notices that the media decides not to plaster her father’s face on the front page of the newspaper. Instead, the visage of an older gentleman with a stern gaze is printed on the front. The headline reads: “Pushing Daisies: Emperor Blume’s Final Contribution to The Gardens”.

The news of the emperor’s death comes from the beginning of the Ember Moon cycle, however, she supposes her father’s incarceration takes precedence over most things. Unfortunately.

She props her elbows on the round table in Clare’s hotel room and holds her face in her hands, starry eyes practically boring holes into the paper. Besides the occasional page turn sip of coffee, the room is silent. She breaks it, asking, “So, what? They finally buried him?”

Peering over the newspaper at Maia in her jadedness, Clare answers, “Yes. The funeral was held two nights ago. After they buried him, he really did make the flowers bloom.”

When I mentioned to my sibling that my chapters range between 9th-10th and 11th-12th grades, he said, "Doesn't most of America read at a 6th grade reading level?" 😭

After I finish a chapter of my novel, I plug it into a word counting site. The website has a feature where it gives you the reading level of your writing.
