Honestly. The more one learns about the current president of the US the more incredible it seems that he ran beauty pageants for 20 years that distributed prizes to *other people*. Must have been torture. Surely there is a video somewhere of him rushing the stage & wrestling the crown off a winner.

No, I think he's got a point. I think MPs should be elected purely on their merits - like outstanding achievements in education, rich life experiences, or impressive legislative record. And who better to judge that merit than the population of a riding where an MP has served for 20 years?
Stop. Rewind. Now write the article again but this time about all the Canadian steel & factory workers who have been laid off. They can't vote for or against the man who is hurting their industries. The guys in Virginia can. Who're the innocent victims again?
These are, inevitably, the same people who think the 'disabled' & 'vulnerable' are special interest groups separate from them - because they're all immortal & don't plan on ever being ill or old or hit by another driver, etc.
This point has been made very eloquently by Luke Kemp: in a disaster the real problems tend to come not so much from ordinary people panicking as from governing elites panicking about ordinary people...
Obviously there are lots of other great movies from the '80s (Das Boot, Kagemusha, Ran, Jean de Florette, heck, I'd say Blade Runner has held up pretty well,...etc)
