I was listening to a table of middle age Republicans. One said how much he liked Mussolini and the other 5 nodded their heads in agreement. Mussolini was the founder of the Fascist Party of Italy and Hitler's right hand in WW2. They then talked about their hatred of liberal intellectuals and Blacks.

It was associated with the French Resistance during WW2. Yes before and after that it was not the same. Casablanca had the one scene where it was sang at the Nazis in defiance. That was when it was associated with The Resistance.
