We no longer share common knowledge — only tribal knowledge. My latest essay asks what happens when truth itself can’t unite us.

We need to recognize that the terms "left" and "right" have no stable meaning. Some of Trump's actions would until recently have been coded "left": expanding the power of the federal government; raising taxes (aka tariffs); antivaxxer "wellness" crusades against Big Pharma and food additives.

The wealth of the richest 1% in America just hit a record $52 trillion. These are the people getting huge tax cuts — paid for by cuts to health care for millions of Americans. Every lie Trump and Republicans are telling right now about the shutdown is meant to distract you from this.
It's great to see the large turnout. I just hope people follow through with all of the other organizing needed to change things. I've seen big rallies in the past that weren't followed by changes in government policy.

Trump's immigration crackdown is hurting U.S. farming, which depends heavily on immigrant workers. Growers are experiencing labor shortages, harvest delays and raising food costs. Over 70% of farmworkers are immigrants, crucial for sowing and reaping.

a 97-year-old Bay Area tennis player challenges age stereotypes, demonstrating the benefits of staying active. Playing tennis boosts cardiovascular health, balance, coordination, and mental acuity in older adults, reducing chronic disease risks and enhancing mental wellness.

When I see someone say, "shut the fuck up," I always think, "There's someone skilled at persuasive communications."
It depends on the case. I know firsthand of multiple cases where police have solved homicides, but of course some crimes go unsolved, and sometimes they go after someone innocent. In the majority of cases the identity of the murderer is either obvious right away or becomes obvious fairly quickly.
Not really. We know he came from a Mormon, Republican family, but that doesn't necessarily tell us his personal beliefs. As an ex-Mormon myself, I know that apples don't always stay under their own tree, but that won't stop me from using this incident to call for an all-out war on Mormonism. ;-)
Back when I was a newspaper reporter, I interviewed a local county board member who was also a banker. On his desk he had a book about how to do foreclosures. I asked him, "Getting ready for Christmas?" He got the joke and replied, "So many widows, so little time."
It's actually pretty difficult to learn their languages. Whales and dolphins, for example, have senses that humans don't, including echolocation and the ability to hear ultrasound. Learning how they understand the world and how they communicate is akin to a blind person trying to read printed books.
A problem with understanding animals' language skills is that we don't understand their languages. Some recent evidence suggests that whales and dolphins may actually have languages as grammatically complex as humans. What they DON'T have is the ability to write anything down and preserve it.
Gary Marcus is not a journalist. He's a cognitive scientist who wrote a pretty good book (not about AI) titled "Guitar Zero" but has lately been writing a bunch of tendentious stuff bashing AI. This column is actually more nuanced and thoughtful than others I've seen from him.
You didn't. How did my comment imply that you did?
It certainly should, but there are differences. Tulsa was an unprovoked assault on a black community. The MOVE fiasco was a bungled, over-militarized response to an armed group that created what their black neighbors called "a clear and present danger to the health and safety of our entire block."
Will got me fired too. Everybody send me money! I am Spartacus!
I *do* care about the political consequences. Of course I do. But caring about the political consequences doesn't mean that I'm willing to abandon the principle of due process.
It is not just the fault of one man. The entire GOP and MAGA are complicit, and the voters who put that man in office bear the responsibility also.

As the economic news keeps coming out over the coming weeks keep one thing in mind: this is the fault of one man and didn’t need to happen.
