The 2024–2025 State of Wildfires report shows a paradox: less land burned, but record carbon released.

ECMWF scientists analysed what drove wildfire events and generated air-quality datasets.

The @wmo-global.bsky.social Global State of the Water Resources 2024 Report includes a contribution from #ECMWF. We provided data from both ECMWF’s ecLand and Copernicus EMS GloFAS, and 10 other global hydrological modelling systems, to build a global picture of changing river discharge in 2024.🧵

🌡️ June 2025 was the 3rd warmest June globally

🥵 June 2025 saw an exceptional #heatwave impact large parts of western Europe

🌊 This heatwave was made more intense by record ocean temperatures.

#climate change means heatwaves are:
🌞more frequent,
📈 more intense &
🌍 impact more people

We have taken the ensemble version of the Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (#AIFS) into operations!

It will run side by side with the traditional physics-based Integrated Forecasting System (IFS).

Learn more about how climate conditions impacted rivers and flooding in Europe in the #ESOTC2024. The distinct east-west contrast in climate conditions in 2024 was also clear in river flow data across Europe, and the year saw widespread flooding. #C3S

Is Europe experiencing more flooding? Yes!

2024 saw the most widespread flooding since 2013, with 30% of European rivers exceeding the 'high' flood threshold and 12% exceeding the 'severe' flood threshold

Europe is fastest warming continent noted in @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social report & greenhouse gas heating +changing wind patterns are driving excess warming, particularly in winter, while less solar shading from declining aerosol particle pollution is adding to summer warmth: doi.org/10.1038/s416...

🌡️ Warmest March for Europe

📈 Second warmest March globally, 1.60°C above the pre-industrial level

🌍 20th month in the last 21 months more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial level

2024 was the warmest year on record with an average global temperature 1.6°C above pre-industrial level.

It's the first year to exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial level, with every month but one since July 23 surpassing this threshold.
