My uncle is a microbiologist studying predatory bacteria at FAMU. His work could solve the problem of increasing resistance to antibiotics. He doesn’t know if his work will continue to be funded. Just an example of the science we NEED. www.nytimes.com/2020/08/25/s...
How Bacteria-Eating Bacteria Could Help Win the War Against Germs (Published 2020)
While microscopic and little known, predatory bacteria are among the world’s fiercest and most effective hunters.

The USAF removed Tuskegee Airmen & Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII from basic training curriculum. For 30 years I promised these women I would not let them ever be forgotten again. We worked for decades to have them remembered. The Airmen too. Knowledge is power. 🗃️ www.msn.com/en-us/societ...

People who are uneducated, uninformed, sick, poor, disenfranchised, fighting each other, and mentally unwell aren’t as much of a threat.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Ok journalists, health journalists: what’s next? I’m a bit freaked out about losing access to data that we use to do our jobs. #healthjournalism

It paves the way for defunding public health initiatives. (Notice how Louisiana has banned public health workers from promoting the flu, COVID, and other vaccines.) Look at where the health care deserts are now. It’s harder for sick people to be politically engaged.

This entire thread is worth reading but I chose to quote this. If you have elders who worked in the Civil Rights Movement, glean their knowledge. We need their wisdom to endure what’s ahead. We need the strength of community and the foundation of our history.
A lot of that information. One thing that we truly need to do going forward is build community, and I don't just mean pumping out e-content, I mean actual community where we can learn from the elders that we still do have because if you don't know where you came from, then you won't know where

I remember when Jeff Sessions was going through confirmation hearings for AG — a young Black woman posted that she didn’t think Sessions was “that bad.” She had no historical context of how he engineered racist voter suppression tactics in Alabama, didn’t know the letter Coretta King wrote…

This week I have been so proud of my colleagues at Found Health for putting together this effort to help our members in Los Angeles who need plus size and mid-size clothing.

(This campaign is just for our members; I don’t want to create confusion. I’m just a proud employee.)

If you are friends or family with journalists covering the fires in LA, please check in on them now and in the months ahead.

Like first responders, they are burying all the trauma they’re seeing up close now to focus on doing journalism as a public service.

This is hard work.
