Turned in the manuscript for my first acquisition—what a lovely experience! My eyes are joyously fried.

RED ANTS, a story collection by Kimberly Blaeser (White Earth Nation), publishes in October with Counterpoint Press. I'm so honored to be a part of this book's journey as its editor.

The entire Never Whistle at Night anthology absolutely rocks, but ‘Behind Colin’s Eyes’ by @shanehawk.com sat me straight down. A killer, close-perspective trip into the woods in a subtly desperate search for dinner gone way wrong.

Hohóú for reading and supporting our stories! Glad you dug mine as it’s like 80% true to my real family lore (Colin is my dad as a boy). In the sequel anthology coming out Sept 22nd, I wrote a sequel story that takes place 50 years later and it’s titled IVOЯIES. Cover reveal soon… NativeHorror.com

I’d like to thank Dr. Krista Collier-Jarvis for inviting me to virtually visit her Indigenous Horror class today to talk Never Whistle at Night, horror in general, and craft. Read some of a new short story too. And it’s always fun to field lit analysis questions about your own work. Hohóú.

Very glad to share. Hohóú for taking the time to read it

But then I was like... he didn't have a death song?

That was Southern Cheyenne Chief White Antelope, and while facing the US Army during Sand Creek, he chanted: "Nothing lives long, except the Earth and the Mountains!" Cool of Ben to shoutout my ancestor I guess, even though it was misattributed.

This post was set in motion because I was listening to one of my favorite bands from high school, Death Cab for Cutie, and on a somewhat recent track, Ben Gibbard referenced my 3x great grandpa.

Grandpa Black Kettle was all about diplomacy and signing treaties to protect his people, but he underestimated the savagery of the white colonizers.

He survived the Sand Creek Massacre in November 1864 only to be shot to death at the Battle of Washita in November 1868 by Custer and his 7th Cavalry.

Grandpa Black Kettle was born c.1803 in the Black Hills back when they lay within French Louisiana. He was a “peace” chief of the Wutapiu band of the Southern Cheyenne.

I zoomed in on his face in this group photo with a loupe to highlight him—the only confirmed photo to have ever been taken of him.

Grandpa Black Hawk and Chief Crow Flies High led a dissident group of Hidatsa & Mandan away from the Fort Berthold rez in 1870.

Lakota kept raiding them so they eventually settled at Fort Buford where Grandpa Black Hawk became Second Chief until the US gov forced them back to the rez in 1894.

Both my 3rd Great-Grandfathers on my Native side were chiefs.

(Left)
Black Hawk (where we get the surname ‘Hawk’ from) was Xosh-gah band Hidatsa and second chief at Fort Buford alongside Chief Crow Flies High.

(Right)
Black Kettle was “peace” chief of the Wutapiu band of the Southern Cheyenne.

Joey Clift’s book is playfully subversive in the best way, and I can’t wait to see the finished copy with Diné artist Julie Fiveash’s amazing illustrations. Congrats to the both of you! I’m honored to have written its foreword :)

It’ll hit shelves October 6, 2026.
I’ve been sitting on this news for a minute, but I wrote a book! It’s called “We’ve Been Here The Whole Time!” and it’s a very unsacred humor / satire book about all things Native America. From me, @andrewsmcmeel.bsky.social and illustrator Julie Fiveash. Buy it when it comes out in October!

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) just pointed out that ICE has a projected 2026 budget that includes $858 million earmarked for bonuses. That means every ICE thug will get an end-of-year bonus around $42,000 while the average American worker might see a $2,500 bonus.

How will the soulless politicians spin another civilian murder in Minnesota? He was armed? He was a terrorist? He maimed a government neonazi cog? Whatever it is, it’ll be another idiotic lie as if the non-MAGA folks will believe it.

Fuck ICE forever.
