Yeah, it was refreshing for the reasons you noted.

Book 66 of 2025 The Word for World Is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

Completed while camping. Enjoyed the message, setting & creativity. Prose felt a bit YA, but one I'll be keeping on the shelves.

4/5: Enjoyed Le Guin's approach to issues around deforestation, colonialism, war, and our arrogance as a species. This is one of those stories that teens could read & enjoy as well as adults - the lan...

Again pretty similar experience. I read Jemision's The Broken Earth trilogy which was my first fantasy books in years and loved it. So I tried A Master of Djinn which was getting rave reviews & then Jade City. I got turned off, recently started looking at another title to try.

It's been a number of years, but I think the action picks up right at the midway point. Bacigalupi leaves some ideas/terms ambiguous which I enjoyed as it forced me to think more about it.

If u decide to go on, I hope it's rewarding!

Same experience here. I didn't DNF it, but probably should have. I found the story underwhelming.

Bummer!! I really loved how things weren't spelled out completely but eventually get fleshed out. I'm doing a reread soon so it'll be interesting to see if I still enjoy it as much.

Book 65 of 2025 Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds

Another one I finished while camping. Expectations were high after House of Suns. Not quite at that level, but still well worth a read!!!

Matthew WK's review of Revelation Space (Revelation Space, #1)
4/5: 4.25 stars A really good mix of storytelling SF with some hard science sprinkled in. Not on par with his book House of Suns, but that's a tough level to achieve. There were some slower parts wher...

Paper Girls is a totally different vibe & Cliff Chiang's art & colors are so enjoyable.

The first 2/3 I gave 4 stars, but the final volume was 5 & the end really raised the whole series. Damn, now I've talked myself into wanting to do a reread 🤣😅

I'm currently reading My Favorite Thing is Monsters

I couldn't remember about Rucka, thought u may have read it. Ewings Hulk is on my shelves waiting to be read, but I've heard nothing but good things.

At one point I rec Chew - perfect when u want something fun, wacky, & crazy. It's easy reading & a fun story that doesn't require a lot of thinking
sfgeek.bsky.social
I can't remember if u read/or I rec the following:
Rucka's Wonder Woman
JM Straczynski Spider-Man
Aaron's Thor
Paper Girls by BK Vaughn

Another completely different rec - Rusty Brown by Chris Ware. Not sure everyone will connect with it, but Ware is an acclaimed cartoonist for a reason

Yes, excellent choice!! I've got the omni 😉

Excellent! It's a title that went under the radar, but I really enjoyed it & bought myself a copy.

A must read.... or a must reread! Ranks as one of the best stories in the DC universe.

Just finished DC: The New Frontier — an absolute joy to read. Cooke’s art is stunning & the finale hit like few comics ever have for me: mythic, hopeful, and absolutely unforgettable. A love letter to these heroes and the dawn of the Silver Age. Pure ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

That's great - I'm really glad it worked its magic on you! It's always fun sharing what I really love & then having others like it as well!!

For something different, but a great story, see if your library has Ballad for Sophie 😉

Completely agree!! History books do this and I'm much more prone to read then when they're at the bottom of the page.

Late to the game as I just got back from a camping trip.

Outside of collections from a single creator, like the Tim Sale link below, I have not dived into this corner. I love The Amazing Adventures of Kaviler & Clay - it's fiction, but dives deep....(1/3)

3/5: Enjoyable story, fast paced, straightforward, and at around 90 pages, a quick dive into this world. This was a recommended as a fantasy story I might enjoy. It actually felt more SF than fantasy....

Excellent review! I really enjoyed The Stars My Destination & look forward to a reread. I like the fast pace, drop a few big ideas storytelling. It's a wild, enjoyable ride - a lot of creativity packed into <300 pages
