thinking about Rabbit Run, where everything but the sex scenes felt gratuitous and self-indulgent. Three hundred pages of him describing dust motes makes rug-munching a bit of a relief.

Last year, I re-read A Christmas Carol. I was struck by the idea that Scrooge was in love with Marley. His grief for his lost love is the whole reason he’s as rotten as he is.
