“We urge MPs to listen to disabled people and reject this legislation. Our welfare system should support those who need it most — not abandon them.” - Sense Chief Executive, James Watson-O’Neill.
“Many disabled people already find themselves in debt because current benefits don’t stretch far enough. Cutting support further at a time when the cost of living remains high is not only unjust — it is cruel.
“The government’s proposed cuts to disability benefits will have devastating consequences for disabled people across the country - pushing thousands further into poverty, hardship, and isolation.
That’s why we’re gathering stories and experiences from parents across the country — to build our case and make the campaign impossible to ignore.

Later this year, we’re launching a parent-powered campaign to demand the government create a simple, streamlined process so all disabled children can access the social care they’re entitled to.
Today we launched a report that found that over half of parents struggle to access support and services that meet the needs of their disabled child.

Grateful to @mencap.org.uk and @jonsparkes.bsky.social for convening a meeting today with government ministers to feed back on their green paper

At @sensecharity.bsky.social we are very concerned about the cuts overall, especially the impact on disabled people with complex needs who may never work
“The independent Impact Assessment on welfare reform, published today, paints a stark picture, surpassing even our worst fears – with millions of disabled people at risk of losing vital financial support, and those already most vulnerable set to be hit the hardest.
Our CEO James Watson-O’Neill said “It’s difficult to see the proposed welfare reforms as anything other than a cost-cutting measure, and we are deeply concerned that the government is attempting to balance the books at the expense of disabled people.
We urgently need the Government to work with us to implement robust financial protections for disabled people with complex needs, and to reduce barriers to work for disabled people and uprate the disability benefits in line with inflation next April.

"At a time when disabled people are already disproportionately impacted by a cost of living crisis, as well as facing extra costs just because they are disabled, we need a system that supports disabled people."
We also understand this is a worrying time for a lot of you, if you are worried or if you want to talk to someone about how you’re feeling, Samaritans are available to call for free on 116 123.

Stop disability benefit cuts

4. The Government will have to introduce new laws to make some of the changes, and it will also be asking for feedback from the public before introducing some of the measures. So, we have a chance to tell the Government how we feel, and get them to change their mind.
2.The Government is going to make it harder to access PIP – not everyone will be affected by this.

3. You do not need to worry right now, not everyone will be affected and it will take time for this all to come into effect.
1. The Government have announced plans to cut Universal Credit for some disabled people, but no one's support will change before their next reassessment. If plans are implemented, then many disabled people could end with a lot less support.
Yesterday’s Government announcements might have left you confused and worried about what is coming next and what it all means, we’ve put together key changes to help.
Get involved now by asking your MP to speak up against cutting vital support: action.sense.org.uk/page/167765/...
Stop disability benefit cuts

A massive thank you to the thousands of you who have emailed their MP already to ask them to speak out against these cuts. We'll continue to speak up about this issue and will support disabled people to have their voices heard during the consultation.
Disabled people need greater financial support from the government – not draconian cuts that will drive more people into poverty. We're deeply concerned about the impact the benefit cuts announced today will have on disabled people.
It’s #SignLanguageWeek! British Sign Language (BSL) is the most common sign language in the UK, but did you know it wasn’t until 2022 that the British Sign Language Bill was passed in the UK, formally recognising it as a language by Law!
