Sunday Morning GAERHF thread. Mood? #GlobalAntiquity
gaerhf-bot.bsky.social
Overlapping conceptions of the human form from Malta and Sardinia. I don't mean that as any formal "Art Historical" statement. Just allowing for overlap in the Central Mediterranean. And beyond. 1: Bonu Ighinu Statuette from Sardiina (C. 4500 BCE) gaerhf.org#bonu-ighinu-... ... 🧵

Also thinking. gaerhf:associated-pleiades-url predicate on a per object basis as grouping mechanism? Right now, GAERHF is "object based". Most records have no indication of higher-level spatial/cultural grouping. Mostly a side effect of data entry stage. How to do that well and how to express in ui?

A "Global Approaches to Early Representations of the Human Figure" video.
gaerhf-bot.bsky.social
There are now 450 entries in GAERHF. So I made a video of scrolling through the "List" view. And paused to click on a few along the way. That was a bit random. This all neither here nor there yet. Much work to do! I had to compress it a bit to get under 100 mb. #GlobalAntiquity #GlobalDH gaerhf.org

A thread on the current state of coverage of the Arabian Peninsula in "Global Approaches to Early Representations of the Human Figure". Though I missed this one, which was staged in GitHub: gaerhf.org#female-khor-... . #GlobalAntiquity 🧵

The guy is really bad at governing. Making a mess of it.That’s just the facts here.

Getting done generating maps for a bit. Choose the center of your world: Alexandria (Egypt), Begram, Berenice (Egypt), Palmyra. And see how close it is to elsewhere. Something like that. <10-ish seconds to generate all four maps and easy to add other sites to the python. (Which I'm happy to share.)
Alexandria with 5 1Km concentric circles. Begram with 5 1Km concentric circles. Berenice with 5 1Km concentric circles. Palmyra with 5 1Km concentric circles.

Working on the little script to generate these. Definitely "vibe coding" here. Map title now indicates center. Here's Palmyra. #GlobalAntiquity
1000 km concentric circles from Palmyra.

The president has no inherent powers. Congress has no inherent powers. The courts have no inherent powers. Each only has the powers granted by the Constitution and that was made by "We the People." The inherent powers are ours. (This is all pretty basic and #SCOTUS has been getting it wrong.)

Feels like it’s worth noting that Trump got less than half the popular vote. That’s becoming stale news. He’s now just an unpopular president. But yeah, last time we really checked, more people voted for someone other than Trump. There was never a mandate.

Roughing out visuals for a big picture talk on Roman Art. Two maps: Berenice on Red Sea and Begram in Afghanistan. Both sites are "nodes" in long distance exchange. 1000 km radii on an equidistant projection for each. Do territorial states matter? Sure. But also not? (Like I said, "roughing out.")

I don’t mean to say you’re wrong. Not at all. I was heartened by approach to a wider antiquity allowed for here. I like to think there are departments – mine included? – letting our PhD students create profiles that would be competitive for this position. 2-and-2. Part of what makes it a good job?

My response to a text from the Cuomo campaign. Prob won’t be read so I post it here. #NYCVotes
Text with following reply to Cuomo campaign. “Yo. I'm voting for the socialist. Don't agree with him on everything but he's shown he cares. Shown he can set the agenda for a better city.”

Indulging in some geekery by bringing a #Meshtastic node along with on commute to ISAW. On the LIRR. No acks yet…

Battled Azure's Docker container setup. Image wasn't working. Failure at start, auto-restart cycle. Issue was my new M4 MacBook was generating an Apple Silicon specific image. Once I built with "--platform=linux/amd64" all was good. A lot of "Digital Humanities" is "Digital Plumbing". And pain. #DH

@epoehler.bsky.social and I (@sebhth.bsky.social) are pushing ahead on "building blocks" for Linked Open Data at Pompeii (P-LOD). One intro is at isaw.nyu.edu/library/blog... . Two current websites are p-lod.org (bare presentation) and palp.art (focus on wall painting). A thread on recent work:

I’m not the biggest @governor.ny.gov fan. Her last campaign was lame – even low energy – and delaying Congestion Pricing was a low point. But she has risen to the moment many times recently, including with this endorsement: www.nytimes.com/2025/09/14/o...

Quick note that I've put in a bit of time to switch 2 flask apps from passenger to gunicorn. Nothing against passenger. Had worked well. gunicorn providing all I need within python venvs. pypi.org/project/Flask/ gunicorn.org . Also using fastapi & uvicorn ( fastapi.tiangolo.com & www.uvicorn.org ).

I'm incredibly excited to welcome Isabelle Taft as @nysfocus.bsky.social's immigration reporter. She's a dogged journalist who is going to rock it during these dark, eventful times.

Her first piece is up today, give it a read:

I’m all for a multi-polar world. But it’s nice to be invited so this is pretty embarrassing for Trump, especially since he stans them all. And anyway, where is he these days??
