Rule 55: Understand Bike Network Function

Many cities wrongly try to help cyclists by adding bike lanes to every street. Great bike networks focus on fewer, low-stress routes by connecting routes using safe, available space.

“As someone who spends much of my time thinking—and writing—about how we build community through the built environment, it’s hard not to see Seaside as more than a vacation spot. It’s a working case study in what planners call New Urbanism.”

Alys Beach was designed with resilience and sustainability as a priority against climate change.
Alys Beach roofs are made of concrete, part of the uber-fortified construction system based on the architecture of Bermuda which has stood the test of countless North Atlantic storms over the centuries.

Alys Beach is a perfect example in pedestrian prioritization in design.
Here’s the first street of Alys Beach, designed for people walking because cars are in the mid-block parking courts, a huge space-saver and urbanism-maker.
